I haven't used my MS Outlook in years but have been using web-based email. I'm starting to get tired of the logging in with multiple accounts and wondered if I could have thunderbird do it for me and what your impressions were of the program. Thoughts?

Dang, when I saw the headline "who here uses Thunderbird?" I was hoping you were asking about this Thunderbird...

I've been happy with the whole suite of Mozilla products. Thunderbird, Firefox, and Seamonkey just rips!
If FF doesn't float your boat, look at opera, too.

I've been using T-bird for ages... yes, it can do multiple accounts. It works well and it's not gates-ware.

I have T-bird but don't use it since I haven't been able to find the user folder to copy to disc. I do that with my current E mail program. All I need do if there is a problem then is reinstall the program and paste the user folder back in. Other than that I liked it. It is basicly a newer version of what I use.

You don't really need to.. they are already on the disk and all you need to do is make a backup if desired. I don't use Thunderbird personally, but I did help a friend do exactly this a few months ago. Each 'folder' is a separate file with the exact same name and no extension.. for example, your "Inbox" is just a file named Inbox (no extension). If you save them someplace else, you can wipe your Thunderbird installation, install a new one and just copy the files back.
Cheers, Brad

First you need to turn on "show hidden files and folders" - which can be found in your file explorer > Tools>Folder Options>View
After you do that, go to C: > Documents and Settings > (User Account) > Application Data (this was a hidden folder) > Thunderbird > Profiles > (folder may have a weird name) > mail >
In the mail folder there may be different folders if you have various email accounts set up. Find the one that's for your account and you an back it up.
I've been using Thunderbird and before that, Netscape mail, for years. Everytime I've moved computers, hard drives, new O.S. I've been able to migrate my email by moving this folder. I haven't lost an email nine years or so. In fact, I just had to do it about two weeks ago.

I use a very old Netscape now and what I said above works great on that program. I started liking it back when I had an old MAC and still like it.
I don't want to back up the whole disc just the mail messages so I can delete them all but have access if I need any of them.
Mdaniels I tried what you say and tried several different files and combinations of files and using test emails. Each time I tried to paste the old file into the new installation I didn't get my messages back.
Thank you both for the help. I'll have another look at it when I get a chance,I never uninstalled it in the hope I could figure out what file I needed to copy.

A little off topic -- How about Gmail? Access from anywhere in the world, and a gig of free Picassa photo storage and free Picassa software. Gmail is handy for file storage & transport too. You can send to yourself attached files, then log into your gmail account & access said files from anywhere else in the world. In exchange for an unobtrusive & narrow side bar of content specific ads, Gmail is free, so one can create multiple junk email accounts for when spam magnet type web based sign ups and online transactions require a valid email address.

The US Air Force Thunderbirds use the F16C-Fighting Falcon if that is any help.
