Went on the Toys for Tots parade here in Chicago this past Sunday... weather was rather kaka, raining and drizzle but at least in was in the forties. So anyway, waited around for some of the local BA.com boys to show but when it hit 9:30 and I was still by my lonesome I headed over to the park to get in the line up. Parade starts at 9:30 so I hustle into position as all the bikes are pouring out in a steady stream onto Western Avenue to begin the run. I hear a voice next to me as a bike pulls up alongside, "Hey, your motorcycle is like mine!" I look over and see this bike, and can only reply, "yeah, sort of", as I had no idea what I was looking at. After two, three glances I finally realize I am indeed looking at another Triumph America sitting next to me. Don't have time to chat as we are all leaving so I spend the majority of the 25 mile parade route riding next to or slightly back of this bike.

Finally get to catch up with the guy at the end of the run. His name is Angel and below are pictures of his bike. Excuse the extremely poor quality, was taken with my cellphone as no way the "good camera" was going out in that muck. Only got to talk with him briefly as it was raining and everybody was in kind of hurry to get out of there. As I understand it he did all the fab work himself. Just had finished putting it together so he could ride in the parade. Hard to tell in the pics but there is a jackshaft built into that swingarm and it now has a shock setup similiar to a softail. And yes, that is indeed a 300 series rear tire. He had some other cool details as well like flames cut from what appeared to be stainless steel and was flowing down either side of the tank. He had never heard of the website here so I told him as much as I could in what little time we had and he said he would check it out. So Angel, if you're looking or lurking pop on here buddy and tell us more about the machine. It's badazz dude and I am sure the rest of us would like some more details, I know I would!

Very cool, I see that jack shaft set up. Pretty slick.I wouldn't want a tire like that on mine but it is a way cool look!

I'm not a fat tire guy, 200 would ok for me, maybe 240, but 300?!?!?

Kudos to him for doing it though. It's all about making it how you want it to be!

Well I'm still hoping Angel, pronounced On-hel, will show up here as lots of you have questions as do I. As far as the motor goes I am guessing it is still stock. It is an '02 so indeed a 790. It appeared he still had the AI system hooked up and the pipes were not stock. They had a really nice tone to them so I am guessing they were either some TOR's with a bit of the packing blown out by now or it
had some surgery done to the baffles.
Got no idea how the bike handles, he didn't say and afterall the entire route was straight. I do think that the bike could of stood there perfectly fine without the sidestand down though, hehehe. The swingarm was quite the piece of work, just wished I could of gotten better pics. He did say he had some bugs to work out with the shifting though, not sure what he meant, said he was having a little problem shifting. Bear in mind though he said he just finished putting it together and this was literally the maiden voyage.

Oh and Tom, not sure if all the plastic parts were chromed. They looked great but I'm thinking it might have been the chrome effect paint. (He did say he was a painter, cars that is)
Angel, WHERE ARE YOU DUDE!?

Wow! Custom redefined.

Jack Shaft:
Quote:

A motorcycle accommodates an enlarged rear tire by interposing an intermediate shaft between the transmission output gear and the rear wheel drive gear. The intermediate shaft includes a power input gear disposed in the same vertical plane as the transmission output gear, and a first drive belt couples the two together. The intermediate shaft also includes a power output gear disposed in the same vertical plane as the rear wheel drive gear, and a second drive belt couples the two together. The first vertical plane lies closer to the central longitudinal axis of the support frame than does the second vertical plane, allowing the center of mass of the engine and transmission to be maintained substantially along the central longitudinal axis. When incorporated into a soft-tail type motorcycle frame, the intermediate shaft is coincident with the pivot axis of the soft-tail suspension.

I really Like it! A lot! I take it that the swing arm is fashioned to a rigid state (no rear suspension). There are no shocks or visible springs.
Ps. Did I mention I really like It!!!?

yes it does have shocks if it's set up like a softail they are under the motor and they use a pull shocks so you can't see them ...

Sure wish I knew the name of the guy who first said the following so I could give him the credit he's due.........

"Just because something can be done, doesn't necessarily mean it should be done."

(nice workmanship there though, I suppose)

I like my handling too much for me to want to go wider on the rear tire but I definitely give it an A+ for originality and workmanship. Good job Angel.

The great part of this website is we can all voice our own opinions on how we feel and GENERALLY wont get shunned for doing so...But come on, are you serious? Just because a guy does a custom job that you dont like, you think he is stroking his ego or "inflating his johnson?!?!?!?!" Cudos to the builder for having the huevos for ripping his bike apart and trying something new! Hence the title of this thread: "CUSTOMS" If you are gonna rip another guy (or gal) down, go find somewhere else to do it!

Gentleman,

Angel's sickle is to be admired not ridden. Enjoyed while ridding the world of all the excess swill. To remonstrate upon the virtues lost as one reflects on bitter dregs...
