Spare me the hero worship. He acted like a jerk... his skill set has nothing to do with this.
I think it takes a heck of a person to work EMT/Rescue. I think it takes a better person to take a look at the stereotypes they hold and to try to move past them. You want better reporters telling more intelligent stories? They certainly aren't going to get them with comments like that.
I'd EXPECT that one of these flying wiseass EMT's would help me should I ever be lying on the side of the road AFU. That's his job. What I wouldn't expect as a member of the public is the same person making someone else's day tougher just for a laugh. I certainly don't expect to hear how proud he is of that sort of behavior either.
If he's got time to come up with a smart alec comment, he's got time to choose to say something intelligent, or simply "I can't comment" and move on. He chose to make a flip remark. My bet is the reporter aired it to show how public servants occasionally choose to act when they think the public won't find out.
