Got a call from my security company that my alarm had gone off. They responded in about 3 minutes I got home in about 10 minutes. My bathroom burglar bars had been bashed in. Just had a quick look around and off the top of my head we have lost around 90,000 South African Rand = 12,931.3 US Dollar worth of jewellery, laptop and portable TV. Now this is just what we can see up until now. The killer is that I have two Boerboels that weigh in each at 72 kilogram = 158.732 828 773 lb, lbs each. The one is super aggressive and nearly ate the security guard when he climbed the gate to get into the property. My neighbour was at home all afternoon and heard nothing but the people behind me saw three young black guys jumping the wall and leaving my property. They also activated there panic button but of course they are gone. So now I ask myself what do I need to keep these types out of my property.

Bad luck Dave. I hope they catch these ******* for you and get your stuff back. I guess you can count your blessing that no one was home and none of your family got hurt. Im suprised those two dogs of yours did not get a bit of flesh. Whats the chances of the police catching these people?

The chances of them getting caught are zero. All I can think is that they had one distracting the dogs in the front while the other were breaking into the house at the back. The thing here is I was on my way home but had to take a phone call as I was leaving. If it was not for the call I would have got here while they were in the house. Now that is scary as it would have been a serious matter as they will kill you just because they can.
On the other hand if I was here and the dogs were around they would have defiantly ripped the @%$#@ apart. The security officer needed to go and have a look in the shed and I had to hold the dogs but they went ballistic and would had ripped him apart if they got loose. So I do feel safe in the respect that if any of us are at home we are well protected by the dogs.
The sad part is even though I am insured some of the jewellery I had specially made for the wife for special occasions.
As we say here quite often, welcome to Africa

I'm kinda suprised that anyone would try getting in with those two dogs.(beautiful dogs BTW, really expensive and rare here!)
Like Mark says, glad the family is ok. It sucks but the stuff is replaceable, your sense of security and well being may take awhile.
After I had my car broke into, and someone tried the house(the dogs scared them off) I decided it was time to move.

The thing is this is such a non event in our lives nowadays that it is more now the inconvenience of filling in the forms shopping around for replacement stuff. I now see my camera is also gone. I suppose as the days go on I will find more stuff missing. I will however get security cameras installed now that is for sure.
Here is my list 3 cars stolen 2 bikes stolen the one being my 71 Bonneville Numerous helmets leather jackets and gloves. Car broken into a few times stuff taken. Cell phones Laptop And a few other odds and ends like clothing.
BUT I am one of the lucky ones I have never been injured nor have any of my family. I live in a low crime area just as a matter of interest

Yeah we don’t have electric fences and security cameras and barbed wire on our walls like the folks in Johannesburg.

Sorry for your loss of property. I hate thieves. They are really only one small rung below a murderer.
I had a home that was burglarized often years ago when I worked night shift. As soon as the ghetto rats who did the deed knew I was not home they hit it several times.
I still hope wherever they are in this world that some great misfortune comes to them. Its deserved and I am a vengeful mo-fo so to speak.
I would love to have an opportunity to go back in time and be sitting in my house unbeknownst to them with a nice little automatic something or other and see the look on their faces as they enter the house and see the muzzle raise into them just before a stream of high cal, high velocity ammo rips through them. The very thought gives me tingles of pleasure.
I hope the low life ghetto weanies who broke into your house get their just reward in this life or another.

As my old BC, Canada friend Moki Larry used to say after working Provincial law enforcement during the 20's, 30's, "There's nothing worse than a common thief". He contended thieves were worse than murderers.
Fortunately where I live electric fences & barbed wire are mostly used to keep cattle and horses where they belong. It's interesting how many of the newer immigrants to this valley from places like metropolitan California and Washington put up No Trespassing signs and install burglar systems. There's even talk of a "gated community" or two, guess they don't trust the locals, many of whom haven't locked a door in years. Guess we're catching up with the syphylized world.

Beautiful pups! Unfortunately they can be easily distracted by a female "scent" or a nice piece of meat "laced up". A trick learned many years ago, work'n for the "correct" side BTW. Sorry for your difficulties

OUCH!!! Sorry to hear this Dave. But at least nobody was physically hurt in this whole thing. (Man!!!...and you'd THINK some low-lifes who'd evidently seem to have the ability to be "dog whisperers" could find some sort of gainfull employment down there, wouldn't ya?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

The dogs have been fixed so they are not interested in females and you may find this one hard to believe they don’t eat meat. I trained them not to eat meat because of this. So it has me stumped I must say. The only reason I can see is because they were kids that did the job and the dogs saw them as such.

Cool dogs , glad they weren't hurt. I worry about my pitbulls getting hurt in such a situation. I hope you had insurance to cover your loss of property and also that nothing was taken or damaged that can't be replaced.
Chalk this up to another BA member having bad luck this year!

9 times out of 10 its someone who has been in your house that rips you off and from the sounds of it, they knew your dogs. when i was a teenager there was a guy in our neighborhood that was a thief never stole from anybody in the hood but dont say you needed a stereo for your car or you would have one the next day ( i hate a thief and a liar)but the rest of us would listen to his stories, he would say that he would not enter a house that had a dog, even a small one as it was to much trouble unless he knew the dog. might want to investigate people that have been in your house??? if i was a thief, i would be danged to enter a house with 2 dogs like that. i can only think of a few things that would be worse than finding my home had been invaded. things can be replaced, but scares on a child are forever!!!!!! be thankfull nobody was hurt
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

I don't know what I'd do if I caught someone stealing my property (Well I really do know, but if I say it, it would be considered premeditated)......I hope you find them and get to make an example out of them before the police arrives (wishful thinking) ........ANGELIS

So now I ask myself what do I need to keep these types out of my property.Sorry for your loss Dave, but glad nobody got hurt.. It really is a shame that people have to ask themselves questions like that in this day and age. It's amazing how different it is in various places around the globe.. When I was living in Iowa, about the worst thing that happened was some ladys car got scratched by, what the police believed, was a child riding a bicycle, and the local cop always fell asleep in his car next to the laundrymat around 9:00pm. If you needed him, you had to go tap on the car window Crime was, at least in the small town I was in, basically non-existent and nobody bothered locking anything. When I lived in Miami, security bars on windows and full security systems were the norm, and shootings, muggings, carjacking and robberies were a daily thing. I have a business in Nicaragua, and down there, barbed wire/electric fenced compounds are the norm, complete with 24/7 armed security with automatic weapons around most businesses, and even most private homes that are more than just a wood frame covered in plastic. It is a shame, but where you have more poverty, you will always have more crime and violence, and must take greater actions to protect against it, sometimes to the extreme. Some interesting facts: Miami is ranked 5th highest in the United States for it's level of poverty (Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (2003 data)), with 27.9% of it's population living in poverty, while no cities in Iowa are in that list. Nicaragua has 48% of it's population living at or below poverty levels (Source: CIA World Fact Book (2005 data)). South Africa, according to the same source, has a poverty level of 50% of the population.. unfortunately, the CIA Fact Book doesn't break that number out by city, just the country as a whole. Guess it boils down to a personal choice as to what level of 'protection' you are willing to put up with and for what reasons. At any rate, good luck to you and your family.. keep safe and by all means, beef up that security system! Cheers, Brad

Dave be careful if it was easy to them they will come back again.Maybe not right away. They will give you a little time to replace everything or they may comeback and get the things they did not get the first time.Make it a little harder to find your really valuable items.Your house never seems as safe after they break in or rip you off inside or outside the house in the yard.Drug addicts seem to steal any and everything. The price of copper is up in our area so there has been thieves killed(YEAH!)trying to steal copper wiring from irrigation pumps and power transfer stations, etc. They deserve to fry because of there actions.

My house was broken into twice 10 or so years ago. All they did was take money and they had to know me since nothing was disturbed. I was working in the junkyard right behind the house. I haven't felt safe leaving my house since. Even now at a different house it still effects me. When something like this happens they take much more than material possessions in a way they take your freedom and peace of mind.

Well guys thanks for all the well wishes it is appreciated sort of takes away the anger a bit. I went to the security company today and we checked out the activation sequence of the alarm. They came in and made straight to the rooms that had valuables in them and only opened up places where we had our valuables stored. Looking back they must have had knowledge of where every thing was. So this now point towards our cleaning lady that comes in once a week.
So here I now sit waiting for the cops to come and take fingerprints they should have been here an hour ago. I will also have the security company here to look at upgrading my alarm system to include sensors outside and a CTV camera monitoring system. This is going to cost me around 20,000 South African Rand = 2,915.83 US Dollar. The CTV system will have four camera night day and in color.

Sorry to hear Dave. I had the same about 2 weeks ago. Strange what they took & what they left - they took my new Glock, some cameras, cash & casino chips. They didn't touch guitars, ipods, HD plasmas, home theater, laptops or other valuable electronics. Turned the place upside down though.
I don't see Boerboels around here much but I got my eye on an English Mastiff. If you end up with an extra puppy, send 'em on to vegas!
