Harley-Davidson Shuts Down Some Production

Manufacturing.Net - November 26, 2007

YORK, Pa. (AP) — Layoffs are under way at the Harley-Davidson plant near York.

Harley is temporarily shutting down production due to a drop in motorcycle shipments.

Workers are receiving health care benefits during the one-week layoff, but they aren't getting a paycheck.

The Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker told workers in September that it would shut down its assembly plants in Springettsbury Township and Kansas City, Mo., for the week of Nov. 26. Also being shut down for the week are three operations in Wisconsin.

That cannot be a good thing, especially for the workforce just before Christmas, goes to show that everything is not rosey and hard times may be ahead..

Sub-prime mortgages, credit card dept, house repossessions. Its all more than just a news story at 6:00.

We are broke. Motorcycles and Boats are the first to go.

Real bargains on craigslist and they still are not being sold.

Like the Soren post where Triumph said the American market is tough this year.

I wonder..., I read a long time ago that prices in this country for Hardleys were kept artificially high by shipping lots to Japan and overseas(Hardleys are nearly 50 thousand dollars there, I hear) and by keeping production down. I don't know if I believe it or not, doesn't seem to fit the logic of supply and demand, dunno though...it could make sense.

I feel bad for the employees that are getting laid off. This is a corporate-level decision that affects them in a big way. You can bet your beef-jerky that the upper-management/CEO types are NOT losing a penny on this.
I wonder what the profit margin/percentage is on each HD sold....

Well in the repair world things are slow also.. The shop up the road and happens to be a great guy is starving right now. Says I am lucky beacuse i am backed up 2 weeks at the moment, but business is slowing down for me also.. People are spending money on Christmas not fixing bikes or buying new ones.

Dont like what you see??? Big red X in the top right of your screen will fix it!

I read once they make about 8%. The dealer makes more than Harley does. It cost a lot of money to run a company that big.

Sure it makes sense. The demand is higher overseas, thus the prices are higher. If both are higher overseas, guess where the supply is going to go (not to the low bidder) And, as a result prices here stay higher. Whether it's planned that way to keep the prices artificially high or not, don't know, but the result is the same. In fact, I hear pretty much the same thing about Oil. China is gobbling up more oil than ever, and willing to pay higher prices to get enough Oil for their economy, so guess who is ALSO going to pay higher prices to get some of that Oil. IF you guessed you and me, you get a gold star (and a kick in the a#$ from Shell, Mobil, Exxon, etc...)

See what happens when the primary national export is money?

this is a national trend affecting not only harley, due to a glut of [barely] used bikes out there, mostly harley's. those riders get one, ride it six months, then trade in for "something different", expecting {according to folk-lore] to get as much or more than their retail price. they buy anyway, the market has a low-mileage bike for reduced price, luring people out of showrooms. same with a bunch of jappers, fine bikes that they are. some folks do wake up and smell the coffee[and roses], get a triumph and never want to let it go........ that's you my friend..... and me also.ever notived how few triumph's in classified ads??? the people that buy hold on to them,,,,,,that's you [and me].

some people are like slinkies, they serve no purpose, but, they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
