I wish the state of Oklahoma had membership in the National association of State Motorcycle Saftey Administrators. It looks like there are 41 States that are active in this safety and awareness program. I've yet to see a public service Road Sign or Billboard here on the highway that reminds drivers to share the road with motorcycles. I know that on the road we all have the responsibility to watch out for ouselves, but more of these signs couldn't hurt. I think I saw a sign in Missouri when I was traveling there last year. Here are a few more good ones from the SMSA site. Are these type of signs used in other countries besides the U.S.? Maryland IdahoNevada Nevada WisconsinIdahoBob

havent seen any in SC, but then again if they did, people would be more inclined to run into something beacuse they would have to put down the coffee, tell the person on the phone to hold on, and stop reading the paper long enough to read the sign.. Only to run into the back of the car infront of them that slammed on the brakes cause a bug hit the windshield on the new Beamer they just leased.
Dont like what you see??? Big red X in the top right of your screen will fix it!

Hey Matthew...you forgot about those ladies putting the finishing touches on their eyelids with their Maybeline Mascara, AND those dudes who's heads are turned while checking them out! (not to mention those other ladies who don't really care much anymore about their appearance and who while driving their minivans at 40MPH have turned around to face the back seat to admonish their little progeny for fighting while on the way to droppin' 'em off at school...let's no forget THEM now TOO ya know) The way I see it, you could run a public service announce 24-7 on TV and on the radio, and yet most people are going to ignore it and go right on living their little insular lives unabated forever. It's OUR responsiblity to stay alive by being cognizant of every other person out there on the streets with us AT ALL TIMES, and to anticipate their next boneheaded manuever.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I saw a guy shaving on the LIE last year...
I agree, it is OUR responsability. People expect everyone to watch out for them... Bad news...

Mr. Ken Kiphart, Chairperson is from Nevada He is not doing too well is he? His own state doesn't own any signs. I could write volumes on the glorified helmet lobby and their well intentioned social engineering but will pass as somebody will have their feelings hurt as usual. If you need somebody else to keep you safe you should own a big truck with rubber bumpers and airplane shoulder harnesses.

I don't know where this fits in the greater scheme, but today a cage driver (DUI), got sentenced to 15 years in the state prison for hitting and killing a motorcyclist in Missoula as reported on KECI TV.
Sadly, I doubt the next DUI will remember this sentence before climbing behind the wheel.

Nobody gets behind the wheel drunk and thinks to himself or herself, "Hey, I better not hit a motorcycle. That would be bad." They're pretty much not thinking, period.

The people we need to worry about are not the type to heed warning signs.
The type of driver alert enough to see the sign is only a minimal threat.

Really?.. DUH!! , I wasn't saying that "I need someone else to keep me safe".....If I felt that way I wouldn't even own a bike. I pointed out that we are responsible for our own safety in my original post, if you will read it.
I was just trying to say that more motorcycle safety awareness might be a positive thing.

I don't disagree Bob. I take offense with the organization not you. They have a thing for signs is about all I can figure. The person who reads it is not the person that kills us as stated in this thread. Training and schools are all a part of the States programs now so that is a done deal dead issue for them.
What do they stand for? Motorcycle Safety, what does that mean? What are their hot issues? Are they in favor of personal freedom as in no helmet laws?
They are a group of professional lobbyists who have created a place for themselves to work. Dues donations and grants keep them in the money. They exist to exist to no other purpose I can see. Read their core values and mission statements. Huh? What did they say. What are they about. They say nothing, nothing at all. They work with State safety administrators for what? State administrators don't know what motorcycles do? They have no purpose but to take money and push for helmet laws in the back offices of State government.
Their entire website is nothing more than double-speak about nothing.
I have re-read my post and apologize. It looks like I was messing with you personally.

What reallys hacks me is that the week before and the week of the Republic Of Texas Rally(largest in the state) they boradcast "Watch for motorcycle" on the freeway signs in and around Austin. The other 50 weeks of the year riders get no consideration at all.

I agree that most people who take the time to read signs, let alone digest the info on them, are not the ones that are the problem, BUT!! Here in NY, a lot of the electric signs that give traffic updates are also the ones that warn to look out for bikes. Now THOSE signs get read by the impatient people who want to know the fastest way, etc. THEY are the ones that are a problem! So like bob said, every little bet might just help! Certainly can't hurt.

Ron,-(satxron) It's ok, I jumped the gun and over-reacted to your post. I know now it wasn't meant to be personal. I just took it the wrong way at the time. No excuses, but I was having one of those rare days where everything starts off bad and gets worse as the day goes along. Sorry 'bout the misunderstanding. Bob

We have a 15 mile stretch of 2 lane East of town where herds (~150) of bighorn sheep routinely spend the fall-winter-spring grazing on roadside greenery. Fish and Game recently put up a set of those portable electronic reader signs warning motorists of the hazard & numbers killed in 2006. A couple weeks ago a trucker struck and killed 6-7 sheep, adjacent to the first sign in one big old mess. That caused a bit of a stir. He proceeded on into town and wanted to file a damage complaint regarding the "state's wildlife" being on the roadway. That caused a bit more of a local stir and warranted a front page story.
Now this isn't a condemnation of big rig drivers, who for the most part are excellent. But it does go to individual responsibility. It's not only reading, but comprehension
I generally concede the right-of-way to wildlife, especially while on two wheels. It's been my experience that they are generally illiterate and the rare ones that actually stop to read, ignore the the signs anyway. In fact, I tend to lump wildlife and cage drivers in the same camp, in a defiant act of self preservation .
