Can't say I looked too close when I installed mine, but those gauges usually have a bulb pressed inbto the back in a rubber grommet-ey fitting... odds on that's what you saw. I must look into replacing that (and the speedo light) with LED's.. not the sort of thing you want to be fiddling with periodically if there's a permanant fix for it.
