I was reading the Christmas bonus thread and thought how things change over the years..

My old man started working for the Imperial Chemical Incorporation (ICI) in 1960 and on 25 years service they took him off to London on an all expenses paid trip, when they arrived at the hotel they presented him with a camera, flash, telephoto and bag etc, all in all around £1000.00/$2000.00.

My Mrs did 25 years in the Civil service a good few years back they offered her £100.00 or a week off work.

I have done 8 years in the Civil Service and got kicked out because I have a Disability, they did pay me compo, but no thank you for your devoted time..

How times change...

As of August 14th, I have 34 years with a Cat Tractor dealership, the last 25 or so on 2nd shift as a shop supervisor.
They are currently looking for a way to get rid of me and bring in a bright young college grad (read cheap) replacement.
So far the only thing stopping them is I get things done, I work well with my crews, and customers trust me.

They hate when that happens.....

7 years left to retire poor at age 62 - I don't see that happening.

Longest I worked at one place was 16 years. Would have stayed to retirement but the new management didn't understand the product line, so they lopped off the entire engineering department so we wouldn't have anything new and people would stop buying our stuff. So, I went to a very large utility company for a lot more pay and retired from there after maybe 8 years.

I worked from 1972 to 2006 - 34 yrs total but the longest at any one company was 14 yrs. I can remember someone telling me in the 70's that the days were gone when you'd work for one firm for your whole career and that people would have five to seven employers. I thought that was nuts at the time but I racked up four and my wife five over the same kind of span.

22 years of running my own business. No one can fire or lay me off. I only have me as an employee, so anything that happens for good or bad is totally my fault. I have no one to answer to, except me (and my ex wife ).

I know how you feel. January 17 will be 8 years at Cummins Northwest. It's the longest I have worked anywhere continuous.

In February, it will be 8 years for me, also the longest I have had a job. And I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon....unless I win the lotto or find a dream job on a coast somewhere....

One job in ten years, but when i was younger, 10 jobs in a year was more the norm.

Surprising what a family and a mortgage will do for you.

30 years at the same job. The company was 75 years in the trucking business, and 105 years total in transportation. After receipt of our fleet liability insurance price on 11/07, we decided not to renew, and shut down. Between the way the world works these days with common sense died and gone to H3ll, and the states and feds with their hands in my pockets, and the lawyers who run the country ruining it with 16,010 neurotic rules & laws, it just isn't worth the trouble anymore.

Yesterday I bought a liability policy for a wood lot, in case a trespasser sues me. I had to have notarized the portion of the policy that states I don't want terrorist insurance on my wood lot in rural CT. My signature alone won't do - a notary, anyway... I would prefer the terrorist would drop a dozen or so Daisy Cutters on the lot and I could sell it as cleared building lots, but now I'm ramblin' on

I leave for an interview in a few minutes for a caretaker job. I want my worst day to be when the mower runs out of gas, instead of someone I hired flops a petroleum tank trailer over at New Haven harbor, or the state is here to do another audit of the books.

Doesn't the Trucking business just purely suck these days. We're in everybodys way, the gov'nts on our back constantly, and fuel prices. My god, its becoming pure misery. People just don't seem to get it. Everything. I mean everything that they use, eat, wear, and play with. Is at somepoint delievered by a truck. Good luck to you in your new adventures. I agree, having just to worry if the lawn mowers out of gas sounds real real tempting.

And so the lack of covenant often felt in today's workplace.

We were a small business where everything got done face to face, without swinging down a hatchet from behind
a phone 900 miles away. Our longest employee stayed 40 years. He was still with us part time when we closed last week.

I have a sweeping generalization that's unfortunately often the truth: "Big companies suck."

15 years total in EMS, 5 years at my current job, spent 10 as a street medic between 2 diffrent counties.Cool thing is I have been in the state police retirement program since day 1. So 5 more years I get to retire.. Depending on how the bike shop is doing I will either hang my scope up for good and run the shop full time, or retire take 2 weeks off and go back.

Big, medium, small. That generalization is more the rule than the exception today. It’s all about making the results for the quarter and what have you done for me lately. The institutional investors that drive the stock market have skewed everything towards short term results rather than long term growth. And unfortunately, one of the easiest ways to get a quick bump in your stock price is to do some restructuring and lay off some employees....

14 years so far, only 6 more to retirement but quite happy with it. Before that it was a few years with Safeway, some shoe-selling in college, and a brief stint selling TriStar vacuums. Way more fun in the Army! Haven't gotten rich at it either, but I do have my toys (bike and Jeep) and I've gotten to see a lot of the world, so I'm happy.

I have a friend who retired at 52 after 30 years with MT Highway Patrol. Myself, had various & assorted adventures for 12-13 years, then "settled down" here almost 20 years ago. At the time, I was surprised to see my name appear in the local phone listing. I've had job offers on the table a couple times, but so far the grass hasn't been greener. It's a good place to be
