In 2006, there were 106 Motorcycle fatalities in SC. So far this year we have...106 fatalities...with six weeks to go.
So, the SC Dept of Public Safety is real concerned and in an article in today's Spartanburg paper (www.goupstate.com) the SCDPS and a representitive of ABATE were given prominent space. The ABATE side concentrated on the (lack of) helmet laws in the state, which is to be expected as that is their main concern.
But it was in the SCDPS comments that you'll find the following little jewel of data:

"Our studies of fatality profiles have revealed that, demographically speaking, fatalities seem to be matching the profile of newly registered owners: male, middle-aged, typically riding luxury bikes without protective gear and little to no training,"

Is that isn't a recipe for disaster, I don't know what is.

I read the article and, although it involves a committee, it sounds like a promising effort. the problem - 106 deaths, is serious enough to galvanize people but the numbers are small enough that somebody can get their head around the problem. The demographics surprised me, as did this comment from further down in the story "The vast majority of the fatal collisions involve either a motorcycle pulling into the path of a vehicle or the reverse."

I actually thought that deaths were spread evenly across rider skill & experience levels and that most accidents happened on rural roads.

The SC data seems like it would be more susceptible of solution.

I would think maybe single rider crashes might fall into this category, but not ones involving a car...
