Wow another America vs. Speedmaster thread. The ultimate newbie question! Well it's all a matter of tast. What sold me was the blacked out engine. In fact I seem to prefer the blacked out engines weather it's the P-twin, V-twin, or in line three. But that was in 04, so if I was looking now, since they are both blacked out, I would still be leaning toward the Speedmaster. I think I like the wheels a little better and the two disk brakes.

I chose the America because of the spokes, and the faster 790 engine. In my opinion, they stopped making the America after 06, now it's just the speedmaster II.

Another AmeriMaster here. Bought my '02 America in fall of '04 and really liked it. Didn't have a chance to try a Speedy before buying. During that winter I went to a bike show in Denver and sat on a Speedmaster... Holy Crap, those drag bars gave me EXACTLY the feel I was looking for for my bike.
Thus began the transformation. First it was the handlebars/risers. Next, JACKPOT, found someone with a Speedy who wanted wire wheels for the old school look - swap. And then the final piece of the puzzle was a Speedy front fender. It is
As far as America vs. Speemaster, it's been said many times... whatever floats your boat.
Ciao!

03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

Think you'll find the speedmaster has a smaller front sprocket,to give it better acceleration, but loses a bit at top end over the america.

On the new models, they are both the same. Both are now 18/42, two teeth more than the original Speedy and 1 more than the America. It seems that most of the Speedy owners that had the original 16T have moved up to 17 or 18. The stock 790 America (or 790 Speedmaster) might lose a bit of oomph going to higher gearing, but with most of the common mods (pipes, airbox, carbs) they do just fine with the 18T.
