Was it the same sales guy at the dealer? That could make the difference right there. I'd call your usual sales guy, tell him about the situation and about your feelings, remind him that your friend is willing to buy, and reiterate that while you plan to keep a relationship with them regardless you hope they can make your friend as pleased as you are.
