Thanks for the input. There's a little play in the terminal wires, so I don't think its them-- the battery seems glued down.
Anyway, I'm happy to report the battery took the charge and that I just got back from a nice little ride.
I'll worry about getting the battery out when I replace it with the new one-- maybe next spring.
