I got an '03 TBA about a month ago, 6000 miles on it. Several times now I've heard a noise, sort of a "plink" like a snap-action switch tripping. I feel it in the grips too, as if somebody tapped lightly on the frame with something metal. Each time I've been stopped at a light, about 5 minutes or so after starting the bike cold. Of course it could be happening while riding too, but it's quiet enough that I wouldn't hear it.

If our bikes were liquid cooled I'd think it was the fan kicking in. Any ideas what this might be?

possibly could just be noise from the engine/frame heating up and expanding.sometimes you hear similar sounds at cool down also.

first thing that comes to my mind is timing chain being too loose and hitting something. Might have to reset the self-adjuster.

Definitely not the brake light switch. It happens when I'm already stopped, and I keep the brake applied when I'm stopped.

bgaw, it did occur to me that it sounds like the noises you hear from a car engine as it cools off, so maybe that's it. It's been in the low 30's all week so there is quite tempera ture difference.

Is the timing chain adjuster something that needs attention at around 6k miles?

I'm thinking crossover pipe expanding.

How loose is the chain?
