Phil, I guess there's one on every forum. I knew he was jabbing at me. I can handle it. But I'm not used to it from someone who should be above that.

NL, Dood, just bustin them nads, get over it, no harm meant! Seriously, I have run the Shell Rotella 4T in many many forms (petro, synth etc etc) and the surprising thing is that I have found the Valvoline MC specific 10-40w to "feel" better than all the others, and it petro based!!! I have tried many many many oils, in all ways and means. I must say though, that I am not one to be afraid of sperimenting. I figure if it blows up, I can rebuild it, and try again. I like to push it to the limit, blow it up (hopefully not, really!!), then back it all off a pubi-meter next time. Don't take it to heart, if you really knew me (like many unfortunately do now) you would finger it out that: I am 50% BS and 50%..."you got your pink slip, boy????" Live on the edge. Life may suck......., but the alternative sucks way more.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Pat, No offense taken. I deserve most of it anyway. Besides, a gunner needs a target. Right?
And now for something totally different: I want to stick to the book until my warranty is up. I have wrenched for a living all of my life and quite frankly I am sick of it. I don't want to have to rebuild something just because I experimented with it. I have other hobbies that I want to devote that time to. Know what I mean?

Way to dig up an oil thread Rob. Lets see today there has been an octane and an oil thread. Whats next? Oh ya, Sparkplugs, I haven't heard about side gapping in a while.

And of course the obligatory WD-40 thread is being delt with elsewhere!

Rotella synth here too. 90 degrees on the slab the other day at a constant 80 MPH - oil was 190 degrees - well within an acceptable temp.

I'd run Amsoil until Pat started using Rotella synthetic after his BB mod. I tried it a few times, then went back to Amsoil 20W/50 because my valves sounded louder (loud valves save lives ). BUT, this winter, using Amsoil 20/50, at 22°F in the morning, my battery just didn't have the power to dig a trench through that molasses, so I went back to Rotella synthetic.

I am about to start using a car tire on the rear - I've seen the light. $70 for a tire that'll last 40,000 miles and you can stop in the rain using only the rear brake.

Jeez, last time you wrote about that it took about 15 minutes to read. Is this the Reader's Digest condensed version?
Just yanking your chain Rob. I read your entire trip report and enjoyed every bit of it.
And just to stay on topic...Rotella T 5w40 with a PureONE PL14612 the last couple of changes(every 4,000 miles), but I've tried most oil and filter combos without noticing any difference. I might switch the filter to something else since it hangs down farther than the stock one.

Derek, PureOne has the same filter in a shorter can, but I can't find the part number. It was listed here somewhere. Which Oil Should I Use?

Maybe it's one of the MC part numbers in the Tech Vault(ML16817 or ML16819)? I've just been ordering the PL14612 from Amazon since they have a 2 pack for $9.88. I'll add on a DVD or something else for the wife that qualifies for the free shipping at the same time. That way I get the wife a little something for a surprise, and get 2 filters cheap. But airguy's recent roadside oil change where his filter took a big hit and dumped all of his oil has me thinking about a lower profile filter.

I recently stopped at the local honda dealer and picked up a filter. It was a good 1/4in shorter than the stock filter.
As deep as the brake pad went into Keith's filter, I don't know if a shorter would have mattered, But I think I'm gonna stick to the honda filter.

Yeah, Keith did have a freak occurrence...first time I've heard of it on these boards in 4 years. But it still might be wise to go with a shorter filter, because the cost isn't much different. IMO it isn't a good idea having the filter lower than the oil pan if you can help it.
We were comparing filters at the Southwest Fest between pulls of beer in Dwight's garage at the end of the day. The PureOne I've been using sticks out down below the oil pan. Some of the others didn't, like Dwight's stock Triumph one. Out of curiosity I just went out to the garage and measured the filter and it's 3 inches long. It's below the oil pan by about half an inch.

The Rotella-T Synthetic is in the Blue jug. The non-syn is in the white jug, and now they have a newer Rotella out in a white jug also, and I think it would be okay to use, too, but I do not believe it is even semi-synthetic, and I do not recall the viscocity. Check the Rotella website for more info on that one - it is intended to help the truckers meet the new EPA guidelines, but I'm pretty sure it still does not contain any friction modifyers that would be harmful to wet-clutch operation. I have not checked the Rotella Motorcycle Forum lately - I need to go see what's up... I'm sticking with the blue jug though. My last oil sample results came back better than ever. I think she finally got broke in at about 25k miles!

The new Rotella jug you saw may be the CJ-4 spec. Class 8 (18 wheelers) truck diesel engines manufactured on or after 01/01/07 need to run on Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, (ULSD) at 15 ppm of sulfur. The pre-07 diesel spec - Low Sulfur Diesel [LSD], was 500 ppm of sulfur. ULSD engines require an oil spec of CJ-4 Will CJ-4 oil hurt a Triumph? I don't really know, but I would lean heavily toward, I doubt it. Shell mentioned that they are going to keep making the blue jug synth we know & love for a while. I don't recall how long, but it was (is?) on their site somewhere. There are still as you know, many pre-07 engines on the road, and many truck fleets pre-bought 06 engine trucks very aggressively to avoid the 07 engines in their tractor replacement cycles. In backlash, some of the major truck makers are now laying people off as a result of the lack of demand caused by the 07 engines. http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/09/346126.shtml The 07 engines are calculated to add up to 16 to $20,000 to the life cycle costs of the vehicle. In the long run, ULSD is a good agenda for cleaning the air we breathe in that the engines burn almost without emissions, but in the mean time, it will hurt an industry plagued with bankruptcies ever since the deregulation of transportation industry rate structures. (See also - airline bankruptcies since deregulation.)
