The main thing is no friction modifiers since that will make your clutch want to slip. Other guys here can tell you more about not using parafin oils and such.I just looked at the tests and you can't beat Amsoil motorcycle oil. It is full synthetic, better than a blend or dino oil since it won't shear or break down as easily and as far as I know doesn't get acidic over the winter.

Urine will work if you can make it stop evaporating and get the viscosity correct. After all, we just need to prevent the metal to metal contact. Smells bad though. Until then, Amsoil 10-W-40 motorcycle oil. I bought two cases +(all he had) of the Amsoil from a dealer who had bought out another and didn't want the bike oil. He sold it to me for $2.50/QT. After that runs out, I'm going to switch to the Rotella 15-W-40 synthetic. If it is good enough for Pat and lots of others here at BA.com, it's good enough for me.

Take a good look around lately? The knowledgeable types don't even post any more. They've probably had "enough".

I use the Triumph full synthetic oil ... just because it's the recommended oil. The people who suggest this are bunches smarter than me and know whats best for the engine they designed. This is an air cooled engine and it operates under some pretty extreme temp ranges. Since synthetic oil is best suited to handle these extreme conditions, that is what I use.
It's not like you have to change it every 3 months.. I mean most of us at best will change our oil once in a season so why the big deal about the price of an oil change?
If you want to cut corners in the cost of motorcycle maintenance, it certainly shouldn't be on oil or tires... my bike gets the best, and according to the folks who built it, Mobil synthetic is just that.

Jerry?

More importantly, welcome Donald to a great site where many people like myself and Scott (who asked this question) have learnt or are learning a sh#t load of info from people who don't mind imparting their experience (like mechanics) and experiences.

FYI I will now be using Motul 5100 but only cos it is a bike specific synth oil this one and looks like it will do the job pretty well.

Right on dude I have used Motul 15w-50w since I did my first oil change. The only change I made was to use Pure one oil filter rather than the K&N. If one checks several oil web sites you can find the proper oil. I usually order enough for two oil changes. One thing I have read many times in this thread changing oil every 3,000 miles. Manual states 6,000 I usually change every 5,000. Triumph oil is way tooo expensive.

Good stuff Jonathon, actually this will be the first time I've used the Motul, so I can't really speak from experience on how good or otherwise it is compared to what I used last time which was Penrite 10/10tenths. I got it from my Dealer who charged me $72AUD for 5 litres. I used 4 litres cos that's how much an oil change with filter uses and the other litre has been sitting there wasting my money. Anyway, I'm hoping the Motul will be just a little bit less clunky on the gearbox cos the Penrite was designed just for engines and not for bikes where the oil lubricates engines and gearboxes etc.

The other good thing about the Motul for me is that I can buy it in a 4 litre container for $55AUD so there isn't any waste and also, the nearby bike shop sell it. Sounds good to me

fatrat has that site been updated? Last time I looked at that there was quite a bit of outdated info. Some good general info but the specifics no longer apply unless it has been rewritten.

Well dawg its like this I have read so many reports on synthetic oil that I have decided to become an oil cocktail maker. I have just mixed 3 litres of 20-60 diiesel oil with one litre of mobil synthetic light weight oil.
I have read of others doing something similer I hope I will get a syntheticly reinforced diesel oil.
Dont know if it makes any sense to anyone but it does to me.
O yes the old diesel oil drained out of the bike looks really good condition but I guess that does not mean alot.
Got to go out for a pastoral vist while the engine fully drains. The oil filter was a pain to get off had to use the old screwdriver trick as my oil wrench was too large.
we will see how it all goes

I have no idea the benefits or lack there of if you mix them. Not sure I would experiment on my bike on the other hand in theory I don't see what harm it would do.

Well gave the bike a service put in the cocktail oil and filter etc etc and guess what? It goes well, engine quiet and the gearbox is sweet. this how it should be! if anything goes wrong, explodes or seizes solid I will let everyone know. but at the moment I am happy
Blessings
Nigel

Very interesting Nige I like to see people taking the risks I wouldn't be game to and are willing to share the results both good and bad. I guess the results will show later on when your bike has done some serious miles with it. Good luck with your oil cocktails and I for one am always intersted in this stuff.
