I went to the Eric Clapton Guitar Crossroads Festival this year. All I can say is FREAKING AWESOME!! Anyhow, the DVD is coming out the 20th of this month. I have already pre-ordered mine from Amazon. If this is anything like the DVD from 3 years ago and you like kick bass guitar I would reccomend getting one or both of either of these DVD's. My favorite artists from the show, aside from Eric of course, were Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck. If you watch the DVD, you'll know why. Information below: ---------- CROSSROADS GUITAR FESTIVAL DVD AND U.S. TV BROADCAST ON "GREAT PERFORMANCES" As previously reported, the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD hits the streets on 20 November. Filmed in HD, two DVD set will contain over four hours of performances from the artists who appeared on stage in Chicago. On 28 November, the PBS show "Great Performances" will broadcast highlights from the day-long event. The first air-date has been announced for 28 November by WNET (Channel 13) in New York CIty, but may vary based on regional broadcast schedules. Additionally, on 21 November PBS will launch a "web companion" for the show. Further information about the DVD, including track listing: Crossroads DVD Details on the PBS Broadcast and web companion: PBS Broadcast ----------

There was a great write up of that in Rolling Stone a few issues ago. They said Clapton was like a tourist, plaid shorts, a hat, and a camera Like a kid in a candy store. I can't wait!

The CrossRoads Blues Festivals are good, but let me tell you fellows something. I had the pleasure to be at the El Mocambo one night back in July of '83 (the show was recorded). This guy was so good that night, up close, in person, it was almost scary... El MocamboRegards, -Ward

Never had the honor or pleasure of seeing SRV. Man what a loss to the world his early demise was. Thanks for the link there. Really got my morning started off right!

I bought a press-photo of SRV & Jeff Beck at the show, came home and stashed it in a music book. Just found it this past winter. It's framed and hanging in our rec room. Wish it was signed. Maybe one day I'll meet Jeff Beck...

I was in a band that opened for Stevie Ray in 1987. We talked for awhile and proved to be a very nice guy..as well as the rest of the members. Saw him one more time just before that sad day of his demise.
Jeff Beck has always been in my top tier of favorites. Only got to see him once on the Blow By Blow tour. He is amazing!

Thanks for the heads up. I have the DVD from a few years ago and will buy this one. BTW; the Jeff Beck "Truth" album may be the best Rod Stewart album out there.

EC is like bottle of wine, he just gets better with age. I just purchased the new Complete Clapton CD and book. I've given him a lot of my money over the years. Mike

I finally caught up with this show when PBS played it on the TV recently. Incredible collection of music. You're a lucky guy to see this in person Keith.
Hubert Sumlin - finally got to see the face behind the git-tar. Howlin' Wolf & Muddy's main man for oh, 40 or 50 years?
Jeff Beck - the footage with close ups of him strangling the strings is a must see for any guitarists and guitar fans. In my opinion, those sounds he gets are 99% his hands and fingers. An awesome display of where the guitar can fly to beyond conventional strum & pluck. I was surprised to see he puts some sort of powder on his hands. Talc? Rosin? Dunno.
Derek Trucks stole the show. I still get chills up my spine just remembering how he / they played that song off the Layla album. D&mn that boy gots some talent. I believe the ghost of Duane rolls with him.

So good. Love EC. Not to hijack, but I have seen him 5 times in which "Layla" was on the playlist. In each show, he did not play the closing solo as it was recorded. Why? Is there an issue? It friggin' rocks.

I think that solo was Duane's or a duet with Duane. My memory gets a little more clogged each day.

I have the cross roads dvd from from a couple few years ago and as you say it is awsome. I was at Carlos Santanas house a few times years ago and while in the "church" strummed a SRV guitar that he had given to Carlos. I wish he (SRV)was still around. I could ride all day listening to SRV tunes. I got to hold a guitar carlos used in woodstock too. That was pretty cool. He has all his guitars in this special room room just for them. The walls of the church are full of all his personal concert stuff. Look forward to getting the new cross roads dvd. The church is Carlos' second house on his property in San Rafael that he uses as a personal jam studio. My two kids used to jam with Salvador up there. Thanks for the heads up Airguy.

Sumlin kicks butt.
Didn't see the PBS broadcast but if it is the same stuff as the DVD they missed the best stuff Beck did by far. He did Strawberry Fields solo, the whole tune, and WOW! is all I can say. Always one of my favs by the Beatles but now I am really happy they wrote that song. Prob not on the DVD due to copyright issues or some such but WOW!
BB was, well, BB.
Steve Wynwood, never ever thought I would see those songs live being as young as I am.
Buddy Guy, well, being a native Chicagoan and having seen him in his own club a number of times I just can't get enough of that man.
Both this DVD and the previous are a true guitar lovers buffet of awesome blues and blues inpsired rock with a little of the esoteric thrown in for good spice. Freaking awesome!
I could go on and on and on about that show. Brought my 18 year old nephew and being a bass player himself, he totally dug the show. I think I will travel to wherever EC decides to do the next one. Besides, it is for charity. Gotta help the addicted rock stars and such in the Caribbean. What would we do without the joy they bring? (Of course meant slightly with just a little tongue in cheek.)

Many probably know this, but since I love to talk Blues... Guy was a wild man guitarist in his early days, utilizing feedback, playing the strings with his guitar cord, so on and so forth. The recording industry as a big business back then was created to distribute selections such as "White Christmas," and so, Guy in his yute-hood days could not get signed as his music was too wild and unconventional. Lucky for us he hung in there, for the world almost didn't get to hear Buddy Guy. Fast forward a few years -- If it weren't for Guy and his early guitar style, let's just say it's likely the Jimi Hendrix we knew and love may well have been quite a different cat altogether. Got to see Guy from 5th row center (until the ticket holders showed up) at a Blues festival. Oh - my - Lord. When he had us at a near frenzy, he ripped into "Voodoo Chile" then stopped abruptly half way through the song, laughing heartily. What did that mean? I don't know, but I've never seen another electric Blues Man with the power and might he has. For EC fans - a little sumpin for your pod players http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2007/07/exclusive-eric-.html

I read his biography..(yeah.. I read a book) sometimes interesting, sometimes boring but very informative. I believe the original recording of Layla had seven guitar tracks with Duane Allman playing the slide riff.

It was interesting to see the many young people in the crowd who were clearly enjoying the show.
