It seems that the 3 little kittens have moved into my barn. 1 white, 1 orange tiger and 1 calico. They are just short of half grown. They are a long haired breed, so much so that they look wider than they are long. Wee beggars are completely wild and really fast running. They ganged up on a rabbit that was living in their corner and ate it, so I think they will do alright on their own.

I am not a cat person, but i have nothing against them.. They stay out of my way, I stay out of theirs.. They are all drag queens anyhow.

Beware GB! If you decide to make one o' those little suckers a house cat, THIS is what may be in store for YOU!!!

I am a dog person but I like cats ok too. It's fun to watch them hunt. I had a calico living in my shed several years ago that would kill rabbits larger than herself to feed to her kittens. From the day the kittens were born until I found homes for them I handled them every day. It was funny when they were old enough to purr, I would walk into the shed and the mother would bolt out the door and the kittens would all run purring to me for petting and treats. Each had a distinctive personality. My Siberian Husky was banned from the area because she thinks of cats as prey animals. The Chow, on the other hand, was great. He would sniff at them and allow them to play with him as if he was a cat. It was really funny to see an 85 pound fighting breed dog letting tiny kittens crawl all over him to scratch and bite his face, ears and tail. Once the kittens were gone we had to find a new home for the cat before the Husky had her as a snack.

Yeah, I used to have a female chow. She would adopt any baby critter. I had a cat for some 20 years that was confused all her life because her adopted father was a big black and white male cat and her mother was the chow. Poor thing went to her grave thinking she was half dog. The chow was funny, while any baby was automatically adopted, once they grew up she would just tolerate them.

Funny thing about chows (I've had a couple of them) they seem to be one person dogs.

My chow-malamute is definitely a one-person dog. But then again, my maine-coon was a one-person cat. Probably says more about me than them.

Okay, okay, I KNOW how this is going to sound and all, and call it a stereotype if you must, but I'm sorry I think the best word I could always find to describe many of the asian dog breeds I've come in contact with is..."INSCRUTABLE"!

(YES...I just said both the words "asian" AND "inscrutable" in the same sentence!...so SHOOT ME!!!)

You SEE at the local dog park, I have YET to meet a Chow Chow(BTW, let me ask you guys this...why the friggin' redundancy there, huh?! ) OR one o' those wrinkly little suckers known as the Shar-pei OR many of those big ol' scary lookin' suckers, the Akitas, and look 'em in the eye and get somethin' back in return...like a little ACKNOWLEDGEMENT maybe???!!!

(alternate theory: they've got a little cat in 'em)

No! Those suckers just look around and around and around, but seldomly look ya in the freakin' EYE, like say a Golden Retriever or a Lab does! Of course, THEY have their own little pecadillos!(but I digress)

I'm tellin' ya, sometimes I think some of these asian breeds are channeling the late chinese gentleman who ironically always played the "inscrutable" japanese interrogator in all those old WWII movies...RICHARD LO.



You guys remember him, don't cha? He was the dude who always said in 'em..."We have ways of making you talk, G.I.!"

I wish a few feral cats would trim back the mouse population 'round here.
If I had a dollar for every mouse nest I've pulled out of the lawn mower engine...

That's better than starting up a bike that hasn't been ridden all winter and blowing mouse nest's out the exhausts! <G>
It wouldn't be funny except that my brother was sitting about 10 feet in back of the bike in his wheelchair... the mouse nests landed in his lap! Thank goodness he used to ride... he thot it was funny as all get out...<G>

Akitas are great dogs. They don't take any crap and don't allow their people to be messed with. A girl I knew growing up had a history of abusive relationships. About 15 years ago her boyfriend at the time liked to slap her, and her kids, around. After one of the times she had tossed him out I helped her buy her first ever home of her own. She decided she needed a dog so I took her to the animal rescue league where she got an Akita/Chow mix. About a month later she let her "boyfriend" move back in with her. The dog took an immediate dislike to him (smart dog). After a week or two he got drunk or high and smacked her (the woman). As he struck the blow the Akita sunk his teeth into his butt right down to the bone and took him to the floor. He kept him trapped in a corner until the paramedics and police arrived. The SOB threatened to sue but never did, he also never returned to torment her again.

I've owned a couple of Akitas (I have one now) I can say they are a unique breed. I've often thought they have "cat like" characteristics and reflexes. I know also that if you're a stranger and you look one in the eye and he DOES acknowledge you, you better not be the first one to blink.

Akitas are great dogs. Smart too. I had one once. They are protective when they need to be and carefully playful other times. I taught her to catch a frisbee when she was 6 months old.
