got it today for free, 1971 CL175K5 Scrambler in great condition. Should be able to get it runnin this weekend. Hope these pics post, loading them has me all frustrated. I have a mac, can someone explain?

Any Mac users out there?!? I have a feeling it has to do with selecting a thumbnail rather than the full picture.

You have to load up the correct size picture, hold the CTRL button down and click on the image then choose Copy Image Address from the pop up menu. Then you can use paste the address into the UBB [image] tags to show off.

go ahead and move it Benny, apparently I posted in the wrong forum. I was trying to read directions and post pics and getting confused all at once. Feel like a dumbass. Whats the correct pic size? anything bigger than 450x whatever is too big of a file?

Nice...I'm considering picking up a CL175 or CB200 to run the Lake Erie Loop with next year.

Looks like a cool bike to play with. My friend who builds custom HDs and owns Dutches Custom Cycles rides a little Honda back and forth to the shop every day. Cracks me up to see since he is a pretty big guy.

I think this will be the one for my girlfriend to learn on, first thing she asked when I told her I picked it up was " Is it small enough for me?" so maybe she wants to ride up front.

If thats the case it's a double edge sword. I love to ride with Wendy but at the same time I worry she might make a mistake and I can't do anything from my bike to help her. I love the look on her face when she sees the new custom job I have done,she lights up. She is so proud of her America and it makes me feel good that she enjoys it so much.

Tell me about it! I thought for sure when the guy didnt even know what it was on the phone, thatit would be a huge piece of crap that maybe I could salvage some parts off of. It didnt even have a cover, just under a big pine tree covered in needles. There is hardly any rust on it, no dents, nothing missing but the side covers. I took the carbs apart and cleaned them today, replaced all the fuel lines, and tried to get it goin, but I dont have spark at the plug. I'm thinking the coil might be bad since I have power through the whole system. Or the condensor, I dont know. I'll replace the whole ignition system till I figure it out. I will update my progress...

OK, today I put a new condensor on, dont know if it needed it but it was 5 bucks, really cleaned the points good and used a battery I had in my basement. It started up with some encouragement!! Runs real rough though and my low idle is plain nasty, keeps shutting down lower than 1000rpm. Looks like I need to do some more carb work cause its running rich, too. Still, I'm pretty stoked to get this much with not much work or money...yet. I need to check the charging system and see if that works. Had it on the center stand and shifted through a couple gears before it shut off. Thats good enough for todays work.

Wow, looks like I haven't updated my progress in quite a while. I had a helluva time getting the bike to run on both cylinders, rebuilt the carbs and cleaned them out real good, still on one cylinder. Finally, found out it was a stuck float. So, I got that fixed and.... success! The bike fired up, both sides kickin, then it took off to high RPMs. Shut off and I couldn't get it started again. Cam jumped time. Cam beat up some of the insides. Also chewed up the cam chain tensioner gear. It's made from plastic. Also bent a valve. Gave up on it for some time. So forward some months.... my fiance says one of her students is in motorcycle repair shop at the local technical high school. Does he need a project to work on?
Of course he did, so I dropped the bike off there and now it's in a hundred pieces. Good news is, I stopped by tonight to check it out, there is another Honda 175 in the shop with a good motor, the teacher there wants to just swap engines and be done with it, since mine is going to need some machine work, which the machine shop there is also going to take care of. If everything works out, I may have the old Scrambler back soon and running good. I feel good about it. I get the work done for free, and not in my driveway where I run the risk of losing parts, and the kids get some valuable training in a supervised environment. Seems like a win/win, since they can't break it anymore than I did.

Finally!! The bike fired up today! Both cylinders, ran pretty well, shifted through all the gears. I knew it was about to be ready, so for the last few unemployed days, I've been going up to the Tech high school and checking the progress, and getting the kid motivated to work. Yesterday I went and got a new battery and plugs, today it needed some slight timing adjustment on the points, but then it fired to life for the first time as a rebuilt motor. Still has some things that need to be fixed, like oil leaks and crusty cables, but nothing too serious. Shouldn't be too long now before I go pick it up and bring it home.

Well, I finally got it back today, took it for the first ride just now! I rode it I rode it I rode it!! It only took a year and a half after I brought it home to be able to take it up and down the street. Still need some work, electrical, front brakes, a few other minor things, but the important thing is that it runs! And it sounds really good, no valve noise like a lot of old Hondas have. The engine is smooth and quiet. Tomorrow, I may illegally go around the block a few times...

Guess I missed this thread the first time around. It is always so cool to bring something back from the dead. A lot of times, my friends have said, "wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to buy something like it that was already done"? Maybe, but that misses the point. Come on man, it's a Honda!! It kicks AND has a button start!!! Good thing too, it's a B to kick it over when it's cold! And that's why I was in FULL GEAR when I took it out, no confidence in the machine yet, and I still feel my last connection I made with Earth!

Seeing the pics of your bike stirred up some memories of an old 160 my oldest brother brought home and rebuilt the first year he came home from the navy in 1970. It must've been a 66 or 67, no chrome on the tank,just a honda badge and rubber pads. I was 12 when he rebuilt the bike, and 13 when I started riding it. It was the first motorcyle I ever drove. I don't know how fast it would go because I was too scared to run it over 70mph but I know it would do more. The kick start was broken off, there was no electric start on this on, so it was a push to start situation. One day I figured out that you could turn the ignition to the headlight on position and it would start without charging the battery. Man I had some fun on that bike. Know what? Its still just as much fun to be ridin whether goin to work, play, or just to be ridin. Enjoy that old Honda dude! Have fun ridin it!

Now I need to trace the short in the wiring.... it just started blowing fuses for no reason. Old bikes are fun! Or a challenge... Or just down right frustrating...

Found out why the fuses were blowing, loose wire in the headlight bucket. Got the wiring harness all put back in and tucked up nice in the frame and zip tied in place. The bike will now start right up with one kick! I left it alone for 24 hours to see if there was any drain on the battery, went out and put the key in, kicked right over and purred. I think I have all the mechanical and electrical kinks out, except for the rear brake switch, now on to the minor issues, like front brakes and tires that aren't cracked.
