I wouldn't use it on a hot surface, let the pipe cool unti you can comfortably touch it. Shield the rest of the bike with section of cardboard or a thick towel and spray carefully, as the product contains lye. Be patient, it's not unusual to wait an hour or more before the burnt mung is loose enough to wipe off. Follow with your favorite chrome polish and you'll be good to go.
