OK, So tonight's the night for gnomes, fairies and ?? Someone should have forwarned me when I bought this house adjacent to the local elementary school. Everytime it quiets down, I figure the little people have gone back to the cave where they belong. Then another wave decends. I swear they hide around the corner and orchestrate manuevers. Was debating what to offer tonight. First choice was pickled herring on salt teen crackers, next year will be miniature carrots or celery with peanut butter & raisens. This year the old stand-by snickers or butterfinger won out ~ "Just one or I'll call the cops". Snickers seem to be a crowd favorite in this neighborhood. Pretty mothers sheperding children are a crowd favorite in this household. This was my old dog's favorite holiday, beating Christmas by a ton. He thought the little people were all coming to see him and scratch his head. The kids all say "Thank You", met by "You're welcome, wait...what's the trick? Give that back" A Safe Night to All......... jh

Ah Yes! I remember all those Halloween nights when I was but a wee tike!!!
BUT, when I was little we were soooooo poor that my parents couldn't afford to buy a store-bought costume for me, so my Mom used to take a brick of charcoal and make it look like I had a 5-day growth of beard. She then would take an old white sheet, cut a big hole in it, and I'd stick my head through it.
I also remember about half way though the night getting really tired of walking up to people's doors and having them ask, "And what are you supposed to be, little boy?"
By that time I'd answer 'em with..."Well, I'm SUPPOSED to be DONE BY NOW, Sport! Can you move your a$$ a little FASTER with that friggin' candy there SLOWPOKE! I'm SUPPOSED to be home by 8:30, D*MN IT!!!"
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

When I was a teenager, Mom went out and asked me and my brothers to deal with all the lovely little children trick or treating. Well, we ran out of candy and being the young teens that we were knew the potential dire consequences of not having any treats. Hmmm? What to do? What to do? Well, we discovered that bullion cubes are nicely wrapped like little caramels. Ahh Hah! Problem solved. The little kiddies got gifts and we were not cleaning dried eggs off our windows. My Mom found out about it at a PTA meeting when one of the other mother's that lived on our street was telling stories about inspecting her kid's candy. I don't know how but some how my Mom figured out immediately who the culprits were. Ahh! Mysteries.

I think we had 1 this year but I didn't hear the door! LOL so make that 0 candy handed out. I have always been known as the scary guy in the haunted house by the kids here. That was before Wendy. But I still get no trick or treaters.

I know where I'm doing my trick or treating next year.

I used to do that. We lived in a neighborhood shaped like the letter P, so people used to drive in there and park along the road because there was NO thru traffic, road full of kids, etc. We could do 2 or 3 laps if you had a good costume.

I live in an old 1870's Victorain mansion on the main street in our town. We had over 450 kids and parents come through our house, which we open up each year. They line up outside to come through. Imagine the Adam's Family house and you can pretty much imagine what our place looks like.

I have a ledger hanging on a string on a clipboard by the front door. I ask the lil darlins to sign upon receipt and have an adult/guardian initial below. It tends to discourage repetitive behaviour and is a good example as they prepare to enter the adult whirled.
ps: I rented in an Addams' family type house in Logan, Utah

psss: What's a HobGoblin anyway? I grew up thinking it was a regular Goblin with a limp?

I dressed as Superman (actually a pretty cool costume) and took the kids out. I think most of the parents got a kick out of seeing me standing in a classic S-man pose.
We get a lot of kids come in from the city next to us. I gues our streets are safer.

Word must have spread fast in my neighborhood, because after the first kid whose "sister was at home sick with the flu" got a few extra pieces, they all seemed to have sick sisters.
Next year I'm joining the 4 guys I saw herding about 20 kids while smoking cigars and pulling a pony keg in a little red wagon.

When my daughter was young I would wait on the street with the pillowcase and send her to the door with the 'little plastic pumpkin' that was empty. She would trick or treat and when they saw she was empty, said "poor girl, have some candy' and throw in a handful. Back at the street we would dump in the pillowcase and continue to the next house. Made out like bandits!

And let me guess, Pokey. She's now 23, weighs 347lbs, and is in constant need of the services of a good periodontist...right?!

Here is a picture (drawing) of my old mansion. Very creepy right now with all the blood red spotlights I have uplighting the structure.

How old are you? If you are my age, maybe you remember Randy's Cycles in Boylston. He was a Triumph, BSA, Norton, Benelli, Rickman, Carrabella, Cotton, and many others dealer. Gone for some 20+ years now, but I have very fond memories of him letting me ride those bikes around the lot. It was where the Red Knights began: Red Knights
