Not having a gas gauge on my new '07 America is a little disconcerting.
So I was wondering how other forum members keep track as to when it's time to fill up. About how many miles can I expect from a tank (mostly suburban riding, a little highway)
Thanks!

Trip the odo. That way you can tell how many miles since filling up.
the amount of miles can vary. I can get 100 from the tank when it's cold I have have the choke on to more than the end of the road, to 150 on a run where I'm doing a steady 70mph along the motorway (highway).
That's to reserve. Some guys won't use reserve, I won't go beyond 20 miles on reserve...

When I hit 100 miles I start looking for a gas station. Maybe over-cautious, but that's me. I hit 140 miles and had to go to reserve once in the middle-of-nowhere, South Dakota. Didn't like that....

Same here. I've varied between 99 (VERY windy day at full throtle and only just cracking 80mph!) and max of 155 to reserve (riding 'normally').
Martin, you'll just have to re-set the trip at each re-fill (like Gina says) and get to know your own riding style.
I've never chanced the reserve for more than I need - 20-25 miles tops.

Gasoline gauges on motorcycles are notorious liers....just as in an airplane..never depend upon that lieing piece of metal and glass ! Use the Odometer , reset at each fill-up ...after checking my ride...I usually hit reserve at about 130 miles....So I just fill up "about" that time , re-set the Odo. and off till next time....Note- cars have fuel gauges , Motorcycles have Odometers and Airplanes have time pieces....follow these cardinal rules of life and never be dissapointed again.....

I always set the trip set at 100 miles.Seems to me the safest option.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I consistently ride to 150 miles before I fuel up. I have yet to need to go to reserve. Average speed 65. Something to note: I have not done any mods yet, that may have a lot to do w/ it.

Kind of depends on where you are. When I'm staying relatively local where there's always a gas station somewhere, then I'll trip the reserve at 140 and start heading in for gas. When you're in the middle of Bumf#%$ Egypt Kentucky, and nothing but tobacco farms as far as the eye can see, mabye better to start looking when you roll over 100-110. I tripped the reserve in just such a case in just such a place in Kentucky as the sun was setting, and put another 28 or so miles on (with the sweat pouring out heavier by the foot!!!!) when I finally tumbled into a little town with ONE gas station (and not much more!) There was NO sloshing sound in my tank, NONE, NADA, ZIP!!! Yeah, that was a bit close! (something to keep in mind when crossing KY on the Pennyrile Pkwy, get gas before you get on, cause there ain't much inbetween!) I was a tad more conservative about it after that!

I usually hit reserve between 120-130 miles. I have the 904cc big bore kit with bigger jets (main and pilot) than stock. Prior to the big bore, I was getting over 140 per fill-up.
On trips, I always try to stop around 100 miles to stretch the legs.

Ok that is a totally different situation,in those cases I try and gas up when over 100 miles or less if I think I won't see a station soon.(gives me 25-50 miles cusion before reserve)

Gas guage on a motorcycle? What'll they think of next? There is plenty of gas left at 100 miles if you stick to normal traffic speeds. That also translates to around 2 hours of riding and you should stop for water and a restroom stop around then anyway.

I've gone between 100 and 148 miles before reserve, depending on conditions, mostly rh twist.
My 03 TBA did exactly 31 miles from reserve to empty. The gas station I was planning on filling up at was closed on the way home from the Jampot Rally in Mass. I was riding with Bucky and Big Poppy, and they rescued me
