Still have my kickstart (1974 Daytona T100R) that I purchased new in 1974! (also a '68 & '70 Bonneville) Sure do love that 'button' on my '06 America though! Gives my knees a break

Still enjoy it. Turns some heads too! Now that is a REAL Made IN England Motorcycle

Been riding since '71.

My 77 Goldwing GL-1000 had one. The only way I could start it with the kicker was to start it with the electric starter first and warm it up. That may have been Honda's thinking. If the starter quit on a ride you could still get it started and get home. I never was able to kickstart it cold.

The original Gold Wing's kickstarter was only to turn the engine over during maintenance. It was a direct-drive on the crank and only turned the engine over the same number of degrees it was kicked.

Sure would be nice to have the option when the battery is dead.

Dick, I have a Boyer-Bransden electronic ignition on my 1970 custom 650 Triumph Streettracker, and the bike won't kick start(or start at all) if the battery isn't charged up to a certain level.

And so I'm not sure, but I wonder if our Hinckley Triumphs with their electronic ignitions would start with a kick if their batteries were in the same state???

(anybody care to offer a guess here?)

One of my mistakes with my Speedy was not to notice the battery terminal was loose.
Wouldn't start.
Second gear, full choke, five steps- VAROOM!!!

Dam a kick starter. Even tightwad Henry Ford saw the advantages to the electric starter. If'n you'd never almost had your arms ripped from the sockets hanging on to the hand crank handle of a tempermental Allis Chambers tractor. Give her a try sometimes. You will appreciate all the more the invention of the electric starter.

Trash, have you ever had to bump-start an electric-start-only bike?

Yes I have. And I will say, sometimes that ain't no fun either. Last summer a friends honda shadow wouldn't start. Weak battery. We pushed that dam bike, with the help of my son, till we were all three laying beside the road hacking an coughing and very near death. We finally proclaimed "this is tha last @@@@@ try." Oddly enough she fired right off that time. All was right in the world..

I have a 1952 Ford 8N tractor that has a hand crank in case the battery goes dead----does that count?

Many kick only, and more with both. It's good to have both. Maybe the Thai bikes will have pedals (like the millions of mopeds there) to start them.
