What is wrong with the younger generation? They think that motorcycles should never pop out the exhaust while decelerating, never vibrate, not even slightly, not one single drop of external oil is tolerated, drivetrains should be absolutely silent at all times, etc.
When I was younger, any motorcycle was just fine no matter what it did as long as we could manage to get it to start once in a while.
Next thing you know, they will be demanding multiple cup holders and air conditioners.

Boy! You're sure right about THAT, GB!!!

Why when I was a pup, if that bike o' mine didn't kick back now and then while I was tryin' to start it up and give me a swollen knee to hobble 'round on for a day or two, I don't know how much "fun" I'd a' missed out on!!!

AND, these upstarts today will never get to experience the sheer "pleasure" of "losing the smoke" out of their wiring harnesses on their BSAs EITHER!!!

Yep! These kids today ALRIGHT!!!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I have to tell myself that all the time. That being that they do pop out the exhaust while decelerating, they do vibrate, they piddle very small amounts of oil on the garage floor, and their drivetrains are not silent! They taint no spring chickens no moe.

When they fire all is well in the world...

Well except when running a bald front tire on the Blue Ridge Parkway at +1.56 times the posted speed. Then it's time to roll into Lynchburg, VA!

Whoa GB! dont clump all us yutes into that catagory. The only thing I ask for is that the CDI not fail in the rain. (and thats only from personal experience.)

BUT I do know the people you are refering too as I'm also forced to wonder the same thing you are.

As a representative of the "younger generation", I have very high expectations from my bike. Here's a short list:

1. Must be able to transport at least 30 cans of beer.
2. Get me from point A to point B in an rather enjoyable manner.
3. Be able, for most practacal (or impractacal) situations, to replace a 4-wheeled automobile.

So far...I'm pleased with my bikes.

Well in THAT CASE Mark, you'll also never know the "pleasure" of pullin' over to the side of the road, taking the tools out that little box that held 'em on your bike, grabing that wrench, tightening the bolts that came loose(maybe even walking back down the road and tryin' to find that one bolt or nut that's vibrated off your bike and that's sittin' in the midddle of road), and maybe grabing that sandpaper in that tool box so you can clean and adjust the points while you're at it, AND, all because your bike isn't as reliable as that 4-wheeled automobile that's just passed you out in the middle of nowhere.

Look...I like the "old stuff" as much as the next "Old Timer"(heck, maybe even more), but I say....Viva Progress...Viva Reliability!

I usually don't carry a full toolbox, so instead, if it's something I can't fix roadside, I'll know the pleasure of getting out my cell phone, flask, and cigarettes. Call someone with a pickup truck, and drink & smoke till they come pick me up.

Yep! Cell phones are the best "tool" one can carry nowdays, in the less and less likely event your MODERN motorcycle stops on ya.

And anybody how doesn't already belong to AAA, should!

(BTW Mark, I said the TRIPLE A here...but this flask thing has me thinkin' maybe the DOUBLE A organization might be an idea for you to investigate too)

What?!? Why? I know that CAA (the Canadian version of AAA) does as long as it's not the basic membership.

is that a euphemism ?

I was thinking about this very topic on a long drive home in the early hours of Sunday morning. As you say every time you went out to the car or bike you wondered if it would start. Now you wonder if its still going to be there !

If anyone had tried to steal my Ariel Arrow in the night, they would have still been on the drive kicking it over in the morning ! It was a cross between black magic and blind faith to get that sob going !

it took me years to get used to taking a break during a journey in case the car or bike refused to re-start.

These days I always make sure I have some cash, a credit and/or debit card and a cell phone as well as my documents when I go out - not for fear of breakdown but of theft.

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Nah....

As the youngest Brit member STILL and the one with the oldest bike... I just wanna put an ignition lock on it! When it eventually goes anyway... And as it's an old Triumph it's bound to leak oil.

And I love the fact that my Americas pop on decel...
And don't get me started on how much my light bar vibrates...I'd never noticed how the whole bike vibrates till I put the light bar on the 06....

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

I concur.. I'm 37 as well and love all the noises my bikes have made.

I would think the younger generation would be more tolerant.. have you seen what they do to the exhaust on their cars?!?!?!

Sounds like a thousand p****d off bumble bees.

Just my 2 cents

I'm with ya GB,when guys tell me one of my antique Triumphs is leaking oil I tell them that's good if it wasn't I would be worried!

On the vibration aspect, That used to be a problem on my 64 BMW since it ran so smooth and was so quiet when I rode with my HD riding buddies I couldn't tell if it was running if they started their bikes first!

My problems with the younger generation goes far beyond bikes. Respect is a huge problem (our friendly yute members excluded) reliance on tech is another, the world handed to them on a silver platter and no dicipline with abcentee parents etc.... darn thumping car sterios so loud I can't hear the TV in the house with windows and doors closed.
darn kids on my lawn!
I have met Mark and I like him so this doesn't apply there, Matt on the other hand I have yet to meet.

sorry got off on a rant there...I'm better now.

I'm a geezer, but, my 2 cents: I want it to rumble when it decelerates with an occasional pop like a properly tuned engine is meant too and I have adjusted it so. I want it to vibrate when it revs to that point, but, not like it was built by a sloppy manufacturer (case in point, the Indian Power Plus fiasco). I do not want to go numb from a poorly made engine or poorly designed frame, I ride for enjoyment (and I do enjoy a tolerable amount of machine violence). Chain drives make noise, so be it. Oil escapes from crankcase pressure build up, so be it. I don't want my spine rearranged by the frame or poor suspension, I've paid to insure that isn't the case with my America. I miss the option of a kick start but the button sure is handy, especially this morning at 8am and 40 degrees. I love my Triumphs more than any other motorcycles I've ridden since 1972.

I try to smear a bit of chain grease on my face & hands, for authenticity. I've heard "belt" people can purchase "authentic" dirty chain grease in a 6 oz aerosal can to achieve a similar appearance.
