In another thread I posted a copy of the following email that I received from our closest Triumph dealer in Charlotte, North Carolina Triumph of Charlotte after I inquired why their "out the door price" for a Triumph America is $9400. "The two-tone bikes sell for $8,199. Freight from England is $400. There is a $295 set-up charge that covers the uncrating, final assembly of the bike, draining the shipping oil and putting the run in fluids in (motor oil, brake fluid, etc.). Sales tax for a vehicle in North Carolina is 3%. We do all the title/tag and DMV work here in house so you don’t have to go to DMV. $229 covers the documentation and Title/Tags are $68." Now, when I was shopping for a 2007 Suzuki Boulevard in May of this year, I received a quote from one dealer that was almost $400 lower than another dealer who was only a few miles away. I noticed that the dealer with the lower quote did not have a "Freight" charge in his quote or a "documentation fee". (I ended up buying it from them). When I inquired at point of sale about the differences in quotes, he told me..."This is an honest dealership, and a "freight" charge is a bogus charge." He told me that freight was already included in the MSRP. He said when a dealer adds a "freight" charge onto the price, it's just extra money for his pocket. He also told me most "documentation fees" are bogus...just padding the bill to put extra money in the dealer's pocket. Now folks, I've only bought one new motorcycle in my life, but I've bought several new cars...and I've never paid MSRP for any of them. When I told this Triumph Stealership that, the salesman told me..."The last 9 Americas I've sold have been for MSRP." Does anyone know of any honest Triumph dealers anywhere? ******, I'd even go out of state if I could find an honest one. In fact, I'm so irritated with the obviously bogus mark-ups and charges of this Triumph dealer, that I may just end up buying a used one from someone instead. Regards, -Ward

Hi Ward
Can't help with the prices as I am in the UK, we can haggle a little bit on MSRP but not a great deal. My America (2004) the dealer would not move at all on the price, but I was trading in my old T140E. I paid £6500.00 of which Triumph threw in £500.00 of clothing at the time.
If I had thought about it before hand I think I would of gone down the road of secondhand as you usually find a very good one which has had a few extras fitted to it (Chrome Goodies that is)
So if you feel you are being ripped off, go second hand, and save yourself a lot of $$$$$ in the long run.

Go to Cycletrader.com and do a search. I found a dealer in Chattanooga with a leftover '06 for $6764. Another in Knoxville with an '07 for $7599.

I don't know about freight charges, others do. I bought a late model used pickup 10 years ago. The chevy dealer had $20 title transfer fee added on. A few weeks later when registering this truck with the local county treasurer, I asked about that fee. She said it was a scam dealers sometimes use, since the state (Montana) does title transfers automatically. Some simple math (used vehicles sold annually X $20) added up to a tidy profit. Needless to say I haven't been back there, which is dumb IMO since they lost a potential customer over a $20 bill.
Yes, there are generally some great values in the "classifieds" here, whichever direction you go.

Too bad you cant get over here on the left coast. My dealer, Cascade Moto Classics is terrific. It's a smaller family owned shop that treats everyone like family.

If I recall correctly, my bike was 8249 out the door, (7999 + 250 for prep and assembly--we have no sales tax). Seems like their charges are a bit excessive. The freight is ridiculous and the DMV part is BS. Time to get a new dealer.

I have bought my last 4 bikes from Clinton cycles in MD near DC. they are a good dealer to work with. you could also look into Triumph of North GA. that is where Chy works and they treated us well at the GA 07 rally.
I would not expect to pay retail and all the fees for an out the door price, some negotiating(sp?) on the price is needed.

I paid $8376 out the door for my 06 America in May of 2007 from Rocket Motorcycles here in San Diego. The sticker price on the bike was $6999.
Along with the T/T/L which were $642, there are $832 in fees that I am not even sure what they are. At the time I was so excited to get the bike I wasn't asking tons of questions. I brought it on myself no doubt, but I don't cry about it, just learned from it.

I bought mine in July from Capitol BMW/Triumph in Raleigh. I would most definitely recommend them to anyone. Raleigh is not all that far for you if you're looking in Charlotte. They were upfront and honest w/ me about everything. They stayed open late to accomodate my schedule. They definitely did not rip me off w/ frivolous charges. When it was time for my first service, when I got to the shop, the service manager explained that he only had one mechanic that day, I said I understand, it's not a big deal, at about 20 minutes after my appointment time, he stopped working on his computer, asked me for my key, and took the bike and did the service himself. They understand the term customer service.

In nearly all cases, the factory ships FOB (freight on board), which means they will load the vehicle onto a truck or railcar and after that the dealer is responsible for getting it to their shop. The cost of doing that will vary a lot depending on distance, quantity and carrier. If they are moving one bike and the carrier has a lot of other stuff on the same truck going to the same general location or if they are moving a whole truckload, it will cost less than if they are hiring a truck just to move the one bike or if they are way out of the way for a truck loaded with other stuff. If they are picking up 40 tons of stuff 2 doors down from the Triumph warehouse and dropping it 1/2 mile from the dealer, the cost of adding a bike or two to the shipment would be negligible.

I don't know why these places are itemizing like that. Retail is retail. Maybe dropping the sticker a grand or so to 6999 helps sell the bike, then they hit you up with the "fees" to bring it back up to full retail. That's pretty shady in my opinion.

They are all out to make money, that's why they're in business. If it means screwing us over, they will.
I asked Triumph's financial director, to his face, why we pay (say) £6000 when the US pays (say) $6000 (work that out at nearly $2 to £1) ... his reply was "because we can" The market says they can screw us so they do ... it's the same when it gets to the dealerships. They are screwed down on their % cut so they try and get it back whever they can.

I agree, it was shady, and I have yet to go back to them other than warranty work that needed to be done. I will continue to do the scheduled maintenance on mine to avoid paying them anything more than I already have. The only thing I would call a benefit is the 10% off any Triumph parts and accessories that I order through them. Haven't used that yet as that stuff is over-priced to begin with.

Ward, give Ridge Motorsports in Batesburg, SC a shout. If you're talking Charlotte, then they are about an hour and a half south (maybe 2) near Columbia, SC. I had them rebuild my bike there, and they went WAY out of the way there for me on a simple warranty speedo replacement (where my own dealer in Greenville, SC wouldn't do SQUAT for me!!! And, the couple times I've been there, they always seemed to have a pretty nice selection of Triumphs, most of their showroom was Triumph. It's certainly off the beaten path, but worth the drive I'd say! Oh, I should point out that prior to them helping me out, I had never even spoke to them before! A nice family run small dealership, not a glamour shop! Ridge Motorsports

I really like my Triumph dealer (D&D Cycles in Pensacola, FL). I paid full list price - that is not uncommon among most all Triumph dealers. The freight charge, like car dealers, is a standard deal. Other than any state sales tax, there should be no other charges other than a title/license fee charge that is should be no more than 60.-70.
I agree with a previous post that dealers that discount and tack on all sorts of other charges are not being straightforward. Uncrating, prep, handling, etc. are nothing but BS charges. More important that the best price to me is getting quality service from people that know and really care about the bikes.

It sounds to me like you are asking which dealer will give you the lowest price. I'd find a dealer you like and buy the bike from them, ****** the few hundred dollar difference. Saving $500 from a crappy dealer and having to put up with two years of warranty/service hassles is no bargain in my book. Maybe I misunderstood your question.

Looks to be another dealer who likes to be a jerk and rip off people. I purchased my bike at Sindt in Dubuque, and they have been wonderful to deal with. I have had dealings with MCC and they also are very nice.

my dealer is pretty business-like and doesn't haggle. I paid $1000 less than list for mine because there was a dealer in a nearby city who was more willing to deal and my dealer matched it rather than lose a sale. I do like the dealer though.

Well, this post is relevant to me as I am also looking for a dealership to purchase an '07 america from. I live in Iowa and am limited to pretty much 2 choices, Baxter Cycle or Breeze Cycle. I'm thinking about going to Baxter as they have offered free installation of any Triumph accessory that i purchase plus 10% off the list price including pipes. Has anyone dealt with either dealership before? If so, let me know, any input is greatly appreciated.

Ward, I could not agree more with Greg. The guys at Ridge are great. You must be somewhere near me, I am in Rock Hill. It is probably 20 minutes to the Charlotte dealer, but I much prefer to drive the backroads down to Batesburg. Very friendly, and reasonable on everything. I have sent two other people down there to buy bikes.
Their shop is in a building that resembles a quonset hut, and the place is simply laid back. Give them a try if you are in our area.

While we are asking about honesty, how are the USA dealers for explaining where the bikes are built? I was so bloomin angry at my dealer for lying to me that my speedmaster was built in England when in fact it was Thailand. I would have been more angry about that lie than being ripped of a couple of thousand.

And Ward, as an add-on to my previous email regarding the Charlotte dealership and the Batesburg one, it is a waste of time to haggle with the Charlotte dealer even on the extra charges. I speak from my own experience and also a friend of mine. My buddy was paying cash, and they would not budge a penny on the add-ons. Would not throw in any extra goodies either (well, I think they mentioned a t-shirt). I guess they can sell enough bikes at MSRP plus markup to not to have to bother with selling to everybody who comes in.
Its makes it real easy to ride to Batesburg in two ways. I saved lots of money, and also I really like the guys down there. Will not buy anything from the Charlotte dealers. It wasn't so much the markup, the guys in Batesburg are just plain friendlier.

I use Ridge Motorsports in Batesburg SC.. About a hour out of Columbia.. They are great to deal with, and the customer service is out of this world.. When I bought my 04 I called Jeff up at around noon. Told him what i wanted, and he said he had one. Made a wire transfer and he preped the bike, loaded it into his truck and deliverd it 3 hours away that night.. How many dealers do you know that will spend their friday night delivering a bike 200 miles? And when it was still coverd by the factory, he would send me the parts ot fix it and I would send him the old.. Only had ot do that once ( Air box exploded).. They are a great company, and I would recomend them to anyone.. But it just so happens I have a 06 Speedmaster for sale.. All stock, even the AI is still on it. Has 8100 miles.. 6200 and its yours. www.ridgemotorsports.net

Pertaining to Baxter Cycle. Family run business, which is almost always better. I live three hours from them, so most of my dealings with them is just ordering parts, never a problem with that. Mr. Baxter can be a litle gruff, but he definetly knows his stuff. Although you don't come away from this dealer with a warm fuzzy feeling, Baxter Cycle has a good reputation and I have found them to be absolutely fair. (I have actually had dealings with cycle dealers who were lavish in warmth and attention while they knifed you in the back and lied to you to your face.)

Rule of Thumb ALL motorvehicle dealers (truck, auto, 4-wheeler , boat, motorcycle and aviation) are to be assumed as crooks until they prove themselves otherwise.......Most of these people could have been attornies if they had been able to score high enough on the LSAT...... But yes....look and ye will find...an honest dealer.

Ward, let me give you an example of Ridge Motorsports. My speedo cable crapped out on me on a Friday. I called my dealer, none in stock, and the bike was still under warranty. Their response, bring the bike in, we'll order one, but we have to verify it's under warranty. I explained that I bought the bike there, and could even give them the VIN (by which they could verify the warranty issue). Nope, have to bring it in. Well, if I bring it in, can you take one off of a floor model, and replace the one on the floor model when it comes in. NOPE! I told them "Screw this, thanks but no thanks, I'll check some other dealers". I called Ridge, and talked to Jeff, whom I'd NEVER spoke to before. He said, "No problem, we don't have one in stock, but I can pull one from a floor model and we can sort out the warranty thing when you get here." Well, I hopped on the bike and hightailed it down there as soon as I could leave work (on a Friday night), and due to some bad directions from Mapquest and poor planning on my part about how long it would take, I didn't roll into Batesburg until almost 7pm!!!! Well, I rode by, just to see where the place was since I was figuring I would have to redo the trip since they were surely long gone by now! NOPE, the door was open and they were waiting for me, on a FRIDAY NIGHT!!!! They offered to help, offered tools, just all around SUPER helpful (I had everything so just needed the cable). While I changed out the cable, they wrote down the VIN, got my name and address, and wished me a safe ride home. After I thanked him PROFUSELY for going out of his way to help me, by taking a cable off of his floor model, AND staying late, he said, "Don't worry about it, I'll run the VIN Info Monday, and if there's anything further, we'll give you a ring!" And off I rode! They treated me exactly the same way after my wreck, and if I were near them now, I'd not hesitate to take my bike to them for anything. You won't find that kind of service (normally) from ANY place.

Great story Greg. Indeed, some dealers are better than others. I've found the service at Jack Trebour Motorcycles in NJ to be excellent, and the salesmen are fair enough.
