All, My 03 America with 10k miles, has started to hesitate during initial acceleration. Cold, warm or hot give her the gas and she hesitates and bogs a bit and then takes off…any ideas? Thanks Wheezer

I think people on here may need to know a little more about your setup Wheezer (Bob).

On both of my bikes the cause stemmed from the hidden inline filter at the fuel line/carb junction. Once that was removed and a separate inline filter was installed the problem went away.

Thanks for the info. How difficult is the removal of the hidden inline filter at the fuel line/carb junction. And, what (type, make, place of purchase) inline filter did you install?

Not so easy, the filter is located at the inlet tube that connects the two carbs (at the base of the fuel line between the carbs). A very long needlenose and patience are required as is tank removal. The I used a metal Wix inline filter (#33027 from O'Reillys), it's a metal can and not too clunky looking between the carbs. There's a much sexier looking K&N in the tech vault . Doesn't take much contamination to make the weeny little filter not work so good. filter picture courtesy ssjones

A bud at work offered his hot sports opinion - tell me what ya think. He said he thought she is running to lean and now that the weather is getting colder... I do have moderate blueing on the 1st 2 to 3 inches of the manifold so I know I'm running a little hot. And, on the way home from work (about 71 degrees, this am it was around 40) the hesitation was minor and then nonexistant but she didn't seem to be as responsive/quick as she usually is... I plan to pick up a K&N gas filter on Friday and attempt an install as well as a tune up on Saturday anyway. Thanks for the help! Bob

If it runs fine once the engine gets above 3500 or so RPM, you might need bigger pilot jets. If it runs fine below that speed, the main jets could be too small.
Could also be that the slide springs are getting a little soft and the slides are opening too soon (or not closing up when you reduce the vacuum by opening the throttle). This causes a drop in air flow and the mixture leans out because there isn't enough pull on the feed jets.

You just might need bigger pilots with the D&D's if you can't compensate by turning the mixture screws out a bit. Hesitation when you roll on the power usually is brought on by the carbs not being properly synchronized... could be something else to look at.
