OK everyone, here's a question for everyone that bought their America's brand new... I'm buying one this weekend and was wondering about haggling with the Triumph dealer. Of course list is $8299 and I'm looking for insight to see what a good starting point is. What did everyone get there's for and how much room for haggling is there? Thanks all, your input is appreciated!

There usually isn'y much to haggle with on new Triumphs. The dealers markup are not much if anything at all. PArts and accessories are another story. You may be able to talk them into throwing in some bits and pieces.

Well, what I was thinking is offering $8000 to $8299 and having them remove the freight and setup costs (seems like extra i shouldn't have to pay for to me), which would save me around 750 smackers. The parts I'm not that worried about because of the $1200 in free accessories that i will be getting.

If you are set on getting a new bike, give them an out the door price you are willing to spend.. let them figure out what to knock off to acheive that price, if possible (usually, they will eat the setup and overhead costs). Otherwise, you can save a few grand by buying used. There are good used Americas/Speedmasters all over the place if you look hard enough, and most will already have lots of accessories and aftermarket pipes in place.

Cheers,
Brad

You might save a few bucks on a leftover or demo.

$6892 for me for an '05 in February of '06. Dealership in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Probably can't get that price now though. Triumph / Polaris of Chattanooga. Probably changed their name or somethin by now....

You may be able to knock off a few hundred bucks on an america at your dealer. It's worth a try and you'll have a better chance if you get some nice accessories/ apparel from him also.

But here's the best part.... as per the Triumph website you still get $1,200 FREE in accessories(see quote below). What else do you want to haggle about?

Now you have one more reason to own one of these amazing rides! Purchase a new America or Speedmaster before November 30th and get $1,200 of Triumph Accessories - FREE!*

Don't miss the deadline!!!!!

Just tell him you want the accessories package that Triumph is subsidizing and you don't want to spend any more than 8000 out the door.

If he says no, then say maybe you need to wait another few months to see how the market goes. I bet he won't let you leave the showroom without the sale. Also don't let him use the accessories as a bargaining chip. They are not his call, they are Triumphs call so they are yours.

His new bikes are showing up in a few months. He needs to sell now. Keep you manor as though you are thinking maybe you don't want a bike after all. He will see you excitement as weakness like a shark and blood in the water.

I won't spend the time here to teach you floorplan but that bike at this time of year is probably costing him money just to sit there.

With my old dealer (he retired and shop closed ) I always bought Demo in the fall and saved bucks AND got the factory goodies to boot...only problem is it means you can't be too choosy on color,,,,but hey,,money saved and new ride

When I bought my bike, I first had them run my credit, but then didn't buy anything that day. Next time I visited, I told them about these guys in Chattanooga, and said for this price I might just go buy it and drive it home to Orlando. I told him that I knew he couldn't match the price, and that I wanted to start a relationship with this dealership in case of warranty work, etc. I told him that if he could sell me the bike for something like $7200, I'd take it. They called me up and accepted the deal a week later....this was for a left over '03 purchased in December....

$8299 doesn't sound too bad if its out the door, but I suspect it is not, and that you'll be at $9k before you get outta there....

Bought my '06 last December. Something like $8600 including light bar, sissy bar and windshield (self installed accessories). Also got an extended warranty (usually a big profit for the dealer) - 3 years, I think.

I don't know if this helps but I bought an 07 speedmaster two tone for $8100. I did not pay for set up or the "delivery charge" that I've heard is added. No documentation fee either.

I thought that was pretty good.

That was about 4 months ago.

good luck and you'll LOVE the bike.

EDIT:It was actually $8200.

I didn't get any off the bike price or delivery charge. They did agree to all add on accessories for 10% off and free installation. I bought all the chrome and had them install it. That included shroud covers and yoke, cam cover, footrests, battery cover, sprocket cover, and tach. There would have been a good bit of labor on install. You can get $1200. of accessories, but that doesn't include installation. Negotiate the installation in the deal.

As was mentioned, there isn't much dealer markup on the Triumph twins. The great hope is that once you see how well they are designed, you will get a hunger for power and buy one of their more expensive bikes. You have a better chance at negotiating for an ongoing discount on future parts/accessory purchases.

I went to my local dealer with the lowest OTD price I could find on the internet. I asked my dealer if he could match it ~~ he couldn't match the price but he came close enough that I bought locally. I think he more than made up for any "loss" on the bike with the cost of the service contract.

FWI on the $1200 bucks. It's half from the dealers pocket and half from Triumph. Dealer is "supposed" to make his share up thru install fees. Don't beat the guy up too bad!

Seems there was very little 'wiggle room' when I bought my '04, got a token few hundred dollars and 10% on some accessories, jacket etc.... still love the jacket.... oh, and the bike.... Ride safe! Ask a Brit what he paid for his bike and how much he got off MSRP.....

Then spent £300 on an alarm and fitting....

Not much wiggle room as other have said. When I bought mine there was no enticements of any kind. I was lucky to pay retail for it.

Try calling the dealers in the area you would feel comfortable driving to. Ask them for their best price out the door. Better yet, call each dealer and ask to speak with the sales manager. Tell him you are buying a bike in the next three days (works best at the end of the month) and you are contacting a limited numbers of dealers to get price proposals. Tell them that you would like to include their store if they would be agreeable. Promise them that you will contact every participating dealer to report the best proposal before you make a decision. And that you can either email or fax your specs, whichever they prefer. (For motorsickles, there is not much n specs but colors and model.)

Do your faxing, call everyone starting with the highest and work your way to the lowest. You'll be surprised at how the high proposals get knocked down.

Doing this at the end of the month will smoke out the dealers that have hidden sales incentives. That one last bike they sell may afford them extra money on ALL the other bikes they already sold. So some may actually sell you a bike at what you percieve as a loss to them. Also you will be playing on the ego. Sales people tend to talk in terms of I sold XX bikes this month. Not that they sold XX bikes at a profit.

You are buying a commodity after all. Let them compete for your business. Why go in to a stealership and play the cat and mouse game (salesman--sales manager) when you can sit at home? NEVER say what you would pay for a bike. When you do, you set the floor. Let them make an offer to you.

BTW this technique works extremely well when buying automobiles/trucks/cages et el.

Good luck!

Here's a copy of an email reply I got from the nearest Triumph Stealer when I inquired why their "out the door price" for a TBA is $9400.

"The two-tone bikes sell for $8,199. Freight from England is $400. There is a $295 set-up charge that covers the uncrating, final assembly of the bike, draining the shipping oil and putting the run in fluids in (motor oil, brake fluid, etc.). Sales tax for a vehicle in North Carolina is 3%. We do all the title/tag and DMV work here in house so you don’t have to go to DMV. $229 covers the documentation and Title/Tags are $68."

What do you guys think?

Regards,
-Ward

My dealer charged list plus $400. freight and $60. title and registration fee - no other hidden charges. My sales tax was 6%. The only other charges were add on parts they made me a deal on and installed free. Your $295. set up charge and $229. doumentation plus the $68. title/tags seems way too much. My dealer mailed the tag and title to me - that was all included.

Sounds like the title and registration fee is $68. Besides freight charge and tax, there shouldn't be a charge for uncrating and set up. I would check with another dealer.

I feel better about my deal now. I am trading a 2005 Ducati ST3 with 10,800 miles and a top case. He is giving me $8,300 for it.

$8,147 - 2 tone America
+ 495 - Freight and Prep
+ 52 - Doc Fee
+ 26.59 - Tax (because of trade),
+ 65 - Title
+ 15 - Plate
= $8,800.59
+ 198.45 - Ducati(Owe -$8,498.45-$8,300 trade = $198.45)
= $8999.04 OTD price

He did sweeten the deal by installing the $1,200 accessories for free.
I think it is a good deal because I am getting a very good value for my trade, and paying MSRP for the bike + fees. If you look up the trade on my Ducati - you will see why I am satisfied Can't wait till Tuesday!

...and that's what I did. That's why I am quite satisfied with the deal that MCC in Villa Park, IL gave me. I could have ended up with a Vulcan 900LT, but the local dealer wouldn't work a good deal. I'm glad I ended up finding the America.

Oh..okay. Disregard my other thread where "you did it". Congratulations! Don't forget your warm riding gear and maybe they would give you a discount on a sissy bar and rack to put a Tour bag on it. Welcome to the Asylum.
