Yeah, that's the kind of helmet I was wearing...a modular helmet.
Fortunately, it worked good for me and stayed intact when I hit the pavement. Only the tinted face shield was knocked off of the helmet.
There are gouge and scrape marks from the side of the helmet down on to the jaw part of the helmet. Fortunately it didn't flip up at impact or I probably would have sustained fractures, or at least some nasty cuts on my jaw.

Although the modular helmet is very convenient, the full coverage non-modular helmet is probably the best.
If I ride again, that's probably what I'll get.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your riding friend.
That sounded pretty awful.
