From the descriptions of charcoal briquet sized chunks of embers being tossed two to three miles by 100 mph winds it would seem that the brush clearing discussion is moot.

If a burning ember lands on green grass, ice plant, stucco or a red tile roof it will go out. If it lands in a thicket of brush next to your home it will ignite and possibly burn your house down. Nothing is 100% effective, but removing the fuel close to your home is a great start. Making your property flame resistant will save you most of the time.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
