Im in the process of fitting America bars and risers to my Speedmaster. I know I may need new cables but can the Speedmaster brake line still be used? Im tempted with routing it down the right side and into the right caliper. Has anyone else tried this?

I have the Speedmaster Risers on my America bars and not need to do anything except re-route around the tank side of things so you should have no issues going to standard America setup! I like the extra pull back and look the Speedy risers offer with the America bars.

Eddy has done it so he should know. But I have moved the front brake line to the right side and then looped the other over to the left side cause I thought I needed to. The straight down hose rubs on the fender and will soon rub through the paint, whenever the front shocks compress.

Thanks chaps,do you happen to know how much longer the throttle cables are on the America? I was thinking that I may just get away with it if I take them down the right side of the tank rather than crossing over from the left.

I had the dealer install America bars & risers on my SM. New cables were required but then there was enough slack for me to install the 2" pull back risers. It's comfortable now.

Hey Newt!

I have America bars and Speedy risers. All I did was re-route cables on the other side of the tank/frame and all has been well for some 15,000 miles. Seems to me the America bars come back further than the Speedy bars. So not sure why the Speedy bars and risers would not work?

Eddy,

I just put on my new set of Jim's Spacers. The throttle sticks when I turn hard right because the cables are pulled tight against the frame so I need to move the cables to the right side of the frame. When you relocated your cables was it difficult? Did you have to remove the tank? I'd love some tips before I start to take mine apart if you have any.

Thanks,
John M.

When I relocated mine, I worked from the control side. I removed the whole control unit and loosened the throttle cable adjusters all the way. I then worked the cables off and out of the throttle control housing, slid them out of the tubes, moved them to the other side, and reassembled.

Taking the tank off will make it a WHOLE lot easier.

Some people did this from the carb side, btw......

Do you think the control side is easier or would it have been better to disconnect the cables from the carb side?

People will argue both ways John. I found the top side easier.

Control, what bonnyusa said... removing a coil and gentle bending and threading will get them where you want them...

Spent an hour fitting the America bars and risers today. No need for new cables I just re routed the throtle cable to the right of the tank ( no need to remove the coil). The clutch cable is a bit tighter but ive not put it through the yokes as standard. Only thing I need to do is get a longer brake line and the jobs done. May replace the standard grips with ISO's while Im at it.There is no need to buy the America cables as a lot of people have done.

Does anyone know if there is an after market seller for the America bars. My dealer in Aus wants $320Aud for them which as usual sounds a bit steep for me and particular considering Brent sells the Speedmaster bars for $25USD. I have emailed Brent to see if he knows where I can buy a set cheaper than what my dealer wants but thought you guys may have some idea. So if someone could let me know I would appreciate your time.

I can think of a zillion after market suppliers that carry similar bars. They wouldn't be America bars per say but would be very close if not identical. Drag Spec.,Vtwin, Custom Chrome, J&P Cycles, Bills HD, Etc.... 1" bars are very common and there are many choices. One word of caution is check width where they clamp and tou want knurling around the bar where it clamps and that needs to be spaced right. HD has same riser spacing as we do also the chrome doesn't last long on quite a few of the cheaper bars.

Here's just one of many online dealers Flanders Bars and a good deal less expensive that the quote you got from your dealer.

Thanks Ed, I'll need a bit of time to go through my options here. It would have been a lot easier to just buy some America bars but not at my dealers asking price. I'm also toying with the idea of re-wiring whatever bars I do get at the same time

Also you never know, something may come up second hand. Anyway, I have heaps to do in a couple of weeks when I go on leave. That's when I'll lock myself away in my shed with just me and my bike to start the 20k svc and also the other changes i.e. new cleanable s/s oil filter, cleanable fuel filter, scott oiler, speed bleeders, Thunderbird cush drive and the Freak setup. Can't wait

I'm also considering taking a baffle out of my long Tors. Not sure yet

On my Bonnie I took a long slender shaft standard screwdriver and pried the grip open gently, gave a squirt of lithium grease, then a firm twist and zoom, off it came. Then I cleaned it thoroughly and on the next set of bars it went, no prob.
