I installed a set of 14 inch apes with BA short risers on my SM today and measured how much over stock I am gonna have to order for the cables. All seem like 12 inches over will work (clutch, throttle & brake). Does this seem too long? I have heard others saying they only went 6 over with the same size bars and so on.
maybe my measurements are off?
Thanks for your help.

Jeff, I used 18" apes with 1" risers and had my cables done 13" over,(worked great). Set up your bars, controls, etc where you want them. Leave your cables attached to carbs and clutch cover. Take a piece of the wire you are using to extend your harnesses, tape it to the end of each cable now route it the way you want it to run and measure. You can't go wrong. Are you running your wires in the bars?

Wires are in the bar...looks Awesome except the where they come out at the bottom! What can I do to hide them, any ideas and pics would be helpful.
Thanks

Jeff, you can see a pic of my bike here in customs, one page back, titled my late brother's chopper. Not much you can do with the wires. I used very low risers and let the speedo hide the rest. I'd like to see a shot of yours. Nothing says chopper like a big set of apes.

I used two piece of split-loom wire cover from the autoparts store, black colored. I tried the chrome, but it was way too visible. Some folks have found a cloth, sheath type material, sort of like braided lines that looks nice. You can just seem the two loom pieces in this pix. Post a shot of your new bars.
I love tall apes but chickened out with a set of mini-apes on my bike. Well, cheaped out is more like it. The mini's allowed me to keep my stock cables and I found the bars cheap.

Here's a closer shot:

How did you get the stock brake line and clutch cables to work for those bars? I've got a 10" rise mini but my lines are @ 3" too short! I wonder if the dealer put SM cables on.
Do you have room to turn or are they tight as h**?

I have about the same height bars and I did not like the kink in the stock clutch cable near the top. I went 4" over with a clutch cable from Barnett. Same thing with the brake line

My bars are an 11" rise and I have no problems with the stock cables (on an America). Wire harness was a little snug, but fixed that.
