OK, this feels like a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway ...

I see posts from a number of people claiming 50MPG or higher. I've got a stock '07 SM with the AI removed and no other mods. What am I doing wrong that leads to (usually) less than 40MPG?

The starter bike I traded up from was a Honda Shadow 600 ... admittedly a much smaller bike, but I was used to getting close to 60MPG on that, and dropping 20MPG is a bit more than I expected in the switch to the Speedy.

I'm not a speed freak ... no extended cruising at high speeds or high RPMs, no really fast starts from a stop. I do a lot of in-city riding (probably 75/25 local/highway), and I tend to cruise at between 3500 and 4000 RPM when I'm not accelerating or decelerating.

Do I need to change something about the way I drive? Do I need to make some kind of change to the stock bike? Or do I just have unrealistic expectations?

Thanks,
