My mother-in law is dying (cancer, hospice, etc.). She's at home, the 3 sisters who hate each other are all in town fighting over "do we keep her so drugged with morphine and keep her comatose, do we back off the drugs and let her communicate (but heaven forbid, she might make a sound, say the others), or do we put her back in the hospital and try to revive her (for what?). Everybody's arguing over the final arrangements. She wanted a simple cremation with no service, but now there's a service being planned, a 40+ mile funeral procession (to a town she's never lived in). Oh, and dare I mention that one of the sisters has already put the house up for sale and used "Mom's" credit card to make the down payment on another house (WTF for?). I guess because it just happens to be the house next door to hers (and her son is ready to move out). Seems to me like they ought to stand by and let my father-in-law decide what he wants to do, ya think? But he's just their "step" father (over 30 years) and this is "Momma's money" so he doesn't get a vote. He's been told he has to move in with one of the daughters. Wonder if his 28 year Navy pension and Social Security checks have anything to do with that generous offer?

I NEEDED a ride today - even though it's raining. 20 miles from home, just as I'm getting my head straight, the bike starts cutting out. Dry everything, roll for another 2 miles. Stop. Repeat. Stop. Repeat. Stop. Repeat.

Every day, it's another fight. I hate this and there's not a ****** thing I can do. I can't even ride!

Dielectric grease needed or a plugged fuel vent hose, both are the usual rainy day culprits. Some preventive maintenance is always good therapy for family stress, go work on your bike and let them sort it out. Been there, it's a no-win situtation for you, you're better off leting them make their own mistakes.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

I had a similar rainy day (well, more like monsoon) problem.
Similar problems with others have found a soaking wet ait filter..
I'm just off now to see if replacing the stock air filter has cured it (slight coughing and splutter).
I'm also going to try a fuel additive from the dealer.

As for the family situation, I have no idea how to deal with that but your suggestion sounds good.
Leave 'em to it because it sounds like they've all made up their minds ... it sucks!

I just had to let it out. Last night was an all-out melee between the sisters. I've always been the "fixer" and I've still got to get my kids, who just drove 400+ miles, in to say goodbye. If it weren't for that, we'd be out of it.

But first, some wrench time!

Thanks, and wish me luck...

Hey Steve, I'm just up in Valdosta,GA. I went through the same thing with my wife's 4 sisters when their father was very ill. After a few "He's not your father stay out of this" I did just that, stayed the heck out of it. Come on up, the refrigerator on the back porch is full of Miller Lite and I have steaks for the grill. NOTHING!!!! destroys a family like a death can. i sure dont envy you and your situation at all. but like others have said, its best that you back away from that mess and go wrench on your bike. seems to me that if they were married for 30 yrs then its all his and the kids should stay the he11 out of it untill he passes, but what do i know???

Without going into a big story, my 93 year old Mom is diagnosed with a cancerous mass in one of her lungs. But, the recent focus is a mild stroke she sufferred which basically zapped her strength, but she is getting around better each day. As far as the cancer, it's not hurting her now, and we all decided to let it go (no treatment). Quality of life for the time remaining is the main concern...

So, my half-brained recommendation for the topic at hand is... after resolving the problem with the bike, take a long road trip stopping at all the invites in here along the way, and eventually find yourself somewhere in Alaska. Camp out there until the family problems (aka fighting sisters) are over and gone, then have a wonderful ride back home...

JMHO :-)

There is a right for almost everyone and everything in this country, including rights for those who have committed the most heinous of crimes.

An exception is the right to choose a peaceful and dignified time of death.

I watched two parents suffer for months in nursing homes, kept alive by modern medicines and such. On a lighter note, my mother, who was pre-deceased by my father, made a candid comment one day from her nursing home bed: "I wish Frank (my father) would come take me to heaven... but... he's probably enjoying the quiet."
I nearly fell out the chair laughing.

I hate it when the vultures awaken.
Please put them in their place. I love to do that, but I hate to "have to".

This is the very thing you always read about. "He was a quiet man, Easy going, very good neighbor. I guess he just snaped." Picked up an ax and wiped out the whole family..... Keep your cool man. Drive slow and drink alot of water. And if all else fails. I have an ax you can borrow....

I don't suppose she has a living will or power of attorney put together that names her husband of 30 years? Actually, I would think if he wanted to push the issue spouse will always have say over children in making the final decisions. Although, in that position, I don't know if I could assert that power or not.

If you haven't done so, everyone get your documents together. First thing my wife and I did after we got married (well, after we consummated it...) was get to the attorney. Wills taken care of, Power of attorney naming each other and my best friend if something happens to us both together, living will saying "pull the plug," and everything going to a trust to be distributed to the educational pursuits of our young nieces and nephews (since we're waiting a while for children).

Nothing makes me happier than to feel like my family can't interfere with MY wishes on how I leave the Earth. In desperate measures, people do desperate things.

She passed away Sunday morning. She didn't have a will. She verbally told my wife her simple wishes, the other sisters refuse to accept it (nothing in writing), so it looks like there'll be a big funeral that nobody will attend. Her husband is elderly, in the early stages of dementia and unwilling to put his foot down. He'll follow the path of least resistance. There's not a large estate, but there should be about 400K. Everything's going on the auction block and we can only hope the vultures let him keep some of the proceeds.

We're standing on the sidelines, but it's painful to watch the chaos.

But I'll repeat what mattfromomaha said; "If you haven't done so, everyone get your documents together"
You never know when something like this will happen.

Meanwhile, it hasn't rained again, so I don't know if the bike's problem is solved or not. I'm sure ready to find out!!!

There is nothing more vicious than kids just before a funeral. I think I've got it figured though, my will starts off, "And being of sound mind, I spent it all"

Heh, some of my cousins are already fighting over my grandmother's money and none of them (well, us, but I don't care) are in the will. She's 87 and if her 100YO sister is any indication she's probably not going anywhere anytime soon. The good news is that her two remaining children, my father and uncle, get along great.

funny thing happened today that kinda fits in with this thread. one of my customers, an elderly lady probably in her early 80s was telling me how sick she has been this yr. and that all her children are starting to ask about the money and property and the will and all these questions that she dont feel she should have to answer. she said what she is thinking about doing is, going to Vegas, gamble till she is broke, then rob a bank. i said rob a bank?? she said of course and then i will plan it so i get caught, and get sent to prison. i said WHAT??? she said if i go to the federal pen, the kids wont have nothing to get when i die and i will get 3 meals a day, the best health care there is and a govt. funeral.
