I've been lurking here for a while reading all the posts and trying to absorb the enormous amount of information presented on performance mods, and carb tuning, exhausts, mains, pilots, needles, shims, slides..I've played around with Dinqua's calculators and I'm still confused about a few things. First I have a 2006 Speedmaster 865, D & D exhausts, and until yesterday the stock airfilter with the snorkel intact. The machine ran good. I pulled the snorkel and seem'd to notice an improvement in performance. COOL!!...sooo I went a step further; I installed a K&N filter and it seemed as if the performance decreased???? I'm thinkin' I leaned the airflow too much.(I haven't messed with the air fuel mixture yet..no tool) I replaced the snorkel thinking that would richen the mixture. THE BIKE IDLED GOOD BUT RAN LIKE CRAP at WOT!! I removed the snorkle again and it ran good..hmmmm. My thinkin is that the K&N flows more air but the snorkel restricts so it should be about equal to the stock paper filter.( flawed thinkin'maybe)
I've e-mailed D&D about what size jets they provide with thier exhaust but they haven't replied. The service manager at the dealership couldn't remember what they come with. I am reluctant to tear into the carbs to find out. In an earlier post Cowboy said he thought D&D provided a 45 pilot jet combined with the stock 120 main. from what I've read and think I understand, this setup shouldn't work. I pulled the plug and it's brownish grey so I know it's not running rich. I realize there are a lot of variables here and I don't want to run it on the lean side. Should I get a tool and monkey with the air mixture screws? Stock I believe is 2 turns out. If I do indeed have 120 mains with 45 pilots does anybody have a recomendation based on the setup I've described?
