Actually, I can help you out there. Many years ago there weas a news paper, New York World i think it was. They sponsored a Baseball Tournament and called it "The New York World Series". Over the years the tournament continued but as time marched on the "The New Yor' part of the name got dropped.
I think that is it.  Any Baseball fans like to confirm or tell me im way off base on this please.
