Since we were apparently off topic in the "Can someone say........................" thread, please feel free to say anything you'd like to say about the EPL or any other football (soccer) team/league in this thread. Or if by chance the topic turns to baseball or any other sport, we can talk about it in this thread as well...

I for one would like to say that I'm very happy with how good Arsenal is doing this year. They are at the top of the league. Several of the players are starting to come out from under Henry's shadow, like Fabregas and Adebayor. It's really starting to look like a good season for the gunners.

Are you happy now Phil?

And in case anyone was wondering, this is a vodka induced post, I'm awesome

Yeh the gunners are starting to shine (who doesn't against Derby ) whereas LFC have started to wain. The Man U v Chelsea game was a very good example of 2 top flight teams with money to spend on decent players (sadly half of Chelsea's player sit on the bench most of the time). Maybe now that Mourinhio has gone Schevchenko will start playing a little better.

I hear that all the time. I've lived in the US all but two years of my life (the other two were in Italy) and I can not watch baseball or football (the US kind) because it's so boring. In baseball they just stand around waiting for something to happen. In Football they make one play and stand around while a call gets challanged or the comercial break is going on. You don't get that in Football (the real kind) and Rugby (my two favorite sports) but I go to work all the time and talk about how Arsenal is doing or how things are shaping up in the Rugby world cup and the most common response to what ever I have to say is "I've watched Soccer/Rugby once and didn't understand what was going on so I never watched it again"

I'm kind of going on a right now but no one was born knowing how things work, people may have been watching certain sports since before they can remember watching them but it was still a learning process. Don't just dismiss something because you don't know about it, learn about Football (the american kind) understand it, then dismiss it for being the most boring way you could possibly spend a sunday afternoon.

To be honest Tim... Rugby League or Union boreds the cr*p outa me too... I can't be bothered with the "Run a little, get tackled, Run a little, get tackled" scenario. The pace isn't fast enough for me. Plus I don't think I've seen the pub full when a rugby match is on the same as a footy match.

Perhaps if one had played football or baseball, one may actually understand it and th beauties of each. I can respect rugby, for it takes toughness to play, but soccer displays none of that to me.

Of course, wrestling ( the real stuff we see in college ) is a great thing of beauty, action, unmatchable toughness and will.

Football (soccer) is not supposed to be a game where you need to display toughness (some may disagree due to the way some players behave). The agility of some of the players and how they weave their way through others and control the ball is proof of that, a tug of the shirt is a foul etc, it's a non contact sport after all Each to their own eh I like watching table tennis too. One hates watching Golf but one simply adores playing.

The only thing that makes Soccer "Real Football" is its the only football where you can't use your hands. Won't take the skill away from them, but other than that, I can't think of a more boring sport.

Australian Rules Football -- The only real football. Hard hitting, no protection, and half the guys get injured during the season. Now thats REAL football. GO GEELONG!!!

Arsenal have started this season very well. Tonights game will be an opportunity to see the young reserve players. Arsen has treated the Carling Cup as a work out tournament for the up and comming youngsters and i think it is great. Sir Alex does as well to a certain extent. All the other teams in the Prem put their top player out in the hope of maybe winning something. Watching Arsenals Reserve team detroy Liverpool last year in the Carling Cup at Anfield was sheer joy. If we go out to night it will be a shame but not the end of the world. But hopefully our reserves will go on a good run again like last year.

In response to some of the other posts on here today.

Real Sport IS Football, aka Soccer, aka Futboll, aka Fottie, aka ...REAL FOOTBALL.

But i will pass comment on some other sports.

American Football. I do enjoy it. It is actually a very easy game to understand, (it has to be, half the crowd are drunk from the tail gate party before the game). I learnt the rules to American Football by playing it on computer games. I dont watch much of the pro game, but do watch the Univeristy of Tennessee games with my wife every week. Though they are not much good this year. Havent been much good since Peyton Manning moved on to the Colts.

The only thing I do not like about American Football is it takes so long to play the game. 3 and a half hours to play 60 minutes of ball......that says to me, they stand around doing nothing for tooooooooo long.

Baseball......OH MY GAWD. I know, it's an American pass time, apple pie and all that, but please. I used to think Cricket was THE most boring game invented but then i went to an Atlanta Braves game. zzzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzz

Basketball....... people say there is not enough scoring in soccer. Well, theres to much scoring in basket ball. When you have a game that socres 95-101 or what ever these scores go up to. TO MUCH SCORING. From the moment the games starts all they do is take it in turns to run up the field and put the ball in the basket. Easier to turn on the tv at last minute of the game and see who has the last shot. Normally thats the winner.

Wrestling, not that WWF stuff, but REAL Wrestling......oh my. I better not talk to much about this. Might get the thread locked. But all i will say is this. Two men rolling around on a mat in their skivvies. Need i say more.

Australian Rules Football. Now this is a truly mad sport. I have no idea of the rules. Im not even sure if there are any, though i guess there is because there is a referee running around the field. The object of the game, beat the sh1t out of the other team and try and get the ball between the posts. trust those Australians to gives us a relaxed and civalized game.

Cricket...... zzz zzz zzz zzz BUT, very civalized. How may sports do you know where they stop mid afternoon for tea. I hate televised cricket, but...there is nothing better then taking a mid summers drive or ride out in to the English country side to some small village in the middle of no where, pulling up to the village green, sitting outside the village pub supping on some real ale and watching two amateur cricket teams play a sunday afternoon match. That to me is a great English Sunday Summer afternoon. Of course, you could also do the same thing but leave out the cricket

However, at the end of the day. Soccer is the real deal, everything else is just a distraction.

Now, would you like me to give you my views on Formula 1 v NASCAR.

Australian Rule Football is a blast to watch, I just wish it was on ESPN regularly again, like it was in the 80s.

Have to agree the gunners are playing well right now and are good to watch.
We'll see what the winter brings and how well they cope with the cold, 2 games a week, heavy pitches and the crappy weather. As ever my money is on Utd (no surprise there), the depth of squad and a self belief for over 90mins has been a hallmark of Utd's play and I still can't see a more complete squad in the premership....

Actually. They were my bet for the title at the begining of the season. I was not expecting Arsenal to start so well, though i did think they would be the surpise of the season. Everyone was writting them off before a ball was kicked, which i thought was a bit silly. The team is gelling together much quicker than i expected. But, like you say, the cold months will be the key to Arsenals title asperations.

Its a bit early to really predict anything, but i am happy to go out on a limb and say it will be a two horse race this year. Arsenal and United. Three horse if Chelsea can get over this internal strike that they have going on...hopefully they wont. I dont think Liverpool will be a factor. Their manager will muck it all up again, like he always does.

However, like i have said in the past. I have been wrong before.

Up the Gunners !!!!

While I always enjoy reading your clever and insightful analyses of the average englishman's(read: soccer fan) mindset, I believe you still haven't come to the realization that America, and indeed americans, are a special breed.

You seem to keep forgeting what I told you a few years back when I apprised you of that oft forgotten phrase in the American Declaration Of Independence where Thomas Jefferson clearly stated:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, the pursuit of Happiness, and the unquestioned Right to use their hands in all team sports."(this last part of course clearly must have been Mr. Jefferson's none too subtle reference to that sport you seem to care about so much)

After reading this lastest opinion of yours, I'm sorry but I have question your loyalty to this country to which you seem to have in all other areas in your life taken to your bossom the freedoms now firmly ingrained into the american mindset.

Once again, I'm talkin' 'bout the FREEDOM to use your hands, like we good americans do whenever we play baseball, football, basketball, hockey(okay, so that's really Canadian, but those guys up there are still on the north AMERICAN continent, ya know), and yeah I suppose even Heneryhawk's beloved westling!

I will forever be off British decent, BUT, at some point in the not to distant future i will take the pledge of alligance and sign on the line and become a fully pledge American Citizen (assuming of course the US Guvment will have me). But even after that my blood will always run Arsenal Red.

All sport, motor sports, bat and ball sports, board games, what ever it may be.

I think a part of the US citizenship deal is knowing who won the 1935 World Series. Could be that was only a (kinda')good line in old war movies. I can't remember who won any of the last 20 series.

Real baseball is played by National League teams, while the American league has prostituted itself by adopting something called the "designated hitter rule". This rule was simply aimed at raising attendance/advertisers/revenue and has little or nothing to do with baseball.

I never understood why Europeans keep calling soccer football .

But actually(as you may know) the candy bar "Bab[Y] Ruth was not named for the "Bambino", but was named for the daughter of President Grover Cleveland.

Ironically however, a few years back there was a rumor started supposedly in the city of Boston that the Butterfingers candy bar was named after a certain baseball player by the name of Billy Buckner!

(but I personally have always thought that the guy got a bum deal, as the Sox's idiot manager shouldn't have had the poor guy with bad knees out there playing first while trying to hold a lead in the ninth inning!!!)

Eeh! I've watched that angle from right field many a time where that darn ball just died after taking that big hop off the infield grass, John, and I'm tellin' ya that poor guy didn't stand a chance...ESPECIALLY with those bum knees o' his!

I'm tellin' ya...he shouldn't have been out there. A true shame. What a great career he had, only to be forever remembered for that one play.

Yes, leave out the cricket... to me a great English Sunday afternoon involves twisty mountain roads and British Iron...much as was had on the now legendary Chattanooga/Chickamauga run last weekend

Hope you have a great day. My dad used to take me to Highbury to watch The Arsenal. It dissapoints me that i dont get to take my boy to Arsenal. But at least he sits and watches that games on tv with me.

Actually, I can help you out there. Many years ago there weas a news paper, New York World i think it was. They sponsored a Baseball Tournament and called it "The New York World Series". Over the years the tournament continued but as time marched on the "The New Yor' part of the name got dropped.

I think that is it. Any Baseball fans like to confirm or tell me im way off base on this please.
