Great explanation about the world bit, thanks. Always wondered about that.

I don't go to many games, I'm more of an armchair supporter myself . Its quite expensive to go atm.

I'm going to watch Liverpool smash Wigan on saturday with my son. Well hopefully they'll smash em, fingers crossed...

@Freedom - I never understand why Americans call it the 'World Series' when it's only them in it.

Nice! Should be a good trip and chances are good for the right result. I must make it to Anfield before the Stanley Park era. I'm planning now and with all of the cups at the moment I should be able to catch more than one match in a weeks' time.

As for the World Series, can't you tell we like to stack the deck so we're always winners? (Actually, a team from Canada won it a few years ago.)

I'm hoping to make it to World Cup 2010 - I left Korea in 99, so I didn't get to see that one, I left Germany in 2005 so I barely missed that one, by God I'm getting to see the next one! Getting a "mid-career" bonus of $30K next year, so I should be able to afford taking a month leave and gallivanting off to ZA. Of course I root for the US team, without really expecting them to make it to the final round. Ditto the ZA team.

Unfortunately, tickets for Anfield games are like rocking horse sh1t to get hold of (unless you know someone with a season ticket), that's why I'm off to Wigan to see them.

The US can't do any worse than they did last World Cup, the only goal they scored was a self goal by Italy

OK Tim,
I've heard all I can stand. I've heard your argument for twenty-five years - about the two twenty/forty minute halves with no protection and no time outs. I love soccer (that's what it is by the way) because it is such a natural sport.
Many times I've seen soccer kickers want to play AMERICAN football, but only for extra points and field goals. When they are asked to play tight end or safety, they always say NO! They know the truth.
Football? It's an AMERICAN sport!!! Stop trying to capitalize on it.
P.S. I've played both games, I know! I coached 8 to 15 year old kids in soccer for 20 years. I've also played in adult soccer leagues regularly until I was 48. How many play AMERICAN FOOTBALL until they are 48? Not many. I couldn't do it - probably because I wasn't good enough.
Soccer is basketball with your feet. Football is just brutal. Rugby? Now that takes leather balls.
WAY TO GO ARSENAL!!!
Conversation Over.

do you think American Football would be AS brutal, even without the protection?

Not only does Rugby take leather balls... you also need leather ears... hehe, have you seen some of those cauliflowers :P

Dennis,
Try telling that to my left leg , currently (still) with 2 metal plates and 17 (9+8) screws (hopefully only for one more month or so ... good riddance!)

The first detailed description of football in England was given by William FitzStephen in about 1174-1183. He described the activities of London youths during the annual festival of Shrove Tuesday:

Quote:

Modern American football grew out of a match between McGill University of Montreal, and Harvard University in 1874.

Wiki Football page

Capatalize!?!? Who's trying to capatalize? Americans, that's who. Football (the real kind) has been being played since the 1100's and we're trying to capatalize?!?!? Seems like someone needs to check their facts before they spout off.
And you want to talk about Footballers not wanting to play tight end or safety? Let's see those fat @$$ line men run up and down the pitch for 90 min, let's see most (american) football players do more than 30 seconds worth of work before they take a break, it dosen't happen!

I love soccer and all that it is. I've even been checking on Arsenal lately.
