Motorcyclist crashes into mortuary, dies

UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM
ALBERT JOHNSON / For SignOnSanDiego

9:37 a.m. September 24, 2007

SAN DIEGO – A motorcyclist was killed early Monday morning when he crashed against a mortuary while trying to elude California Highway Patrol officers on city streets at up to 100 mph.

The predawn pursuit began shortly before 2:45 a.m. when two CHP officers spotted the 25-year-old rider speeding south down Euclid Avenue at 60 mph, said CHP Officer Brad Baehr.

The posted speed limit on that street is 35, Baehr said.

As the CHP unit made a U-turn and tried to catch up, the motorcyclist ran a stop light and turned west onto Imperial Avenue, reaching triple-digit speeds.

“He was looking over his shoulder. He was well aware of (the officers') presence,” Baehr said. “They were the only two vehicles out there.”

Seconds after crossing over Interstate 805, the fleeing motorcycle came to the first of two sharp S-curves on Imperial Avenue as it passes by the Greenwood Cemetery. There, the chase came to its deadly end.

“The motorcycle struck the curb, hit a mailbox and then a building. The rider was ejected,” said Baehr.
The motorcycle struck the Cypress View Mausoleum. The rider's body landed in front of the building, about 50 feet from his machine, said Baehr.

“The officers were attempting to stop him for excessive speed. We don't know why he ran or what the motivating factor was with that,” Baehr said.

The rider was a San Diego resident. The man's identity is being withheld by the Medical Examiner's office until his family can be notified

There are only two sad parts to this
1) that he hit the mosoleum and probably caused damage to it.
2) more bad press for riders.

Serves the little right.

Run from the Police and you get what you get. This little put the lives of the Police Officers at risk as well as any body else who happened to be near by.

I've got no time for people who run from the law.

Ditto! Was coming home Friday night, and 3 sport bike riders were ripping it up on Rt 7. As I was getting near the off-ramp, one of them comes flying by me doing about 75-80, doing a wheelie, and starts getting wobbly as he's nearing my car. So great, not only is this idiot going to cream himself, which of course I will get to see and will stick in my head for most of my life, and maybe even affect my desire to ride again, but he's probably going to cream my car in the process! Well, luckily Johnny Rocket didn't spill, and slowed down, but then his buddy comes up behind me going a tad too fast given that I was slowing for a red light, and gets about 3 feet from my rear bumper and does a stoppie, going a bit higher than maybe he planned (or maybe he was really an arsehole and wanted to almost flip over his handlebars?!) Just a few more people giving the majority of bikers a bad name....

The last thing to go through his mind was his liver! Good for him, another Darwin award.

The sad thing is that his family will probably bring suit against the LEO for pursuing him so fast and causing him to wreck.

The sad part is that you never hear the " 5 ridders stop to help a ridder they did not know on the interstate". but the news jumps all over the " Idiot runs into a wall at 100mph with no helmet, carrying blue prints for WMD's talking on a cell phone, all while having a kid napped Nun on the back.. Face it the media dont care about whats "good",, Good dont sell air time. I have seen many many many motorcycle accidents in my line of work, and folks in 15 years I have yet to see the guy on a motorcycle win.. As for this ****** hat here,, he got what he had coming to him. Its hard for me to feel sorry for someone who knows whats right and whats wrong but takes the wrong path.

Yeah , the consensus here is that you live by the sword , you die by the sword , tragically true , but it is SAD that a real person with untold potential was a recipient of his own misguided reactions . Fortitude , hormones , drugs , who knows ? The ultimate tragedy is that he left this world too soon , leaving behind grieving parents , wife , kids . I don't condone or defend his behavior - I just wish you could see this through eyes filtered by compassion .I have kids his age , some of you do also , how would you feel if it were your son ?

Understanding, Wade, has many levels. How would you feel if while running he killed your son? The untold potential of the innocent snuffed out by the sociopath.

Maybe he left this world just in time, to save the one he doesn't kill tomorrow who will save humanity. Its all for a reason too big for us to figure out.

Na, give him a Darwin award, he was a dangerous idiot.
