Looks like FriarJohn successfully shortened the rear posts sometime back. Appears he had to replace the "stalks" completely with hollow chrome tubing and threaded "pipe".

The picture depicting the mod is long gone from his www page, but it did look good.

In the same thread member larryshep explains how he modified and kept the existing posts.
