Do the rear turn signal posts just unscrew from the licence plate breacket? If so what thread size are they?

There is a nut inside the rear license plate holder.
You may have to hold the post with a pair of pliers wrapped in a rag to get the nut to loosen.
Good Luck.

Can I assume you are asking so you can shorten the posts? If you are, and you do, let us all know how it works out. Been thinking about it but haven't started taking things appart yet.

Actaully I am thinking about replacing the posts thing with an LED light bar. I haven't decided yet exactly how I am going to go about it yet (design wise), but I am planning on somehow having three rows of leds on each side (red, yellow, red). One row of red will be running lights, the other red row will be brake, and the yellow will be turn signal. Larry's post about the Third Brake Light Pulsar got me thinking about getting that to flash the brake lights. This will all be in addition to the stock tail light that I already have a Tailblazer bulb in.

It's an idea that is still all in myhead at the moment. Whatever I do, I want to do it so it looks natural, like it belongs that way. I also want to figure out a way to do it so I don't loose much in width.

Hey Soren
If you can give them a bit of heat to help with the loosening. Mine had locktite on them and they were tight.
You could use a pencil blowtorch or something like that.

Stew, Thanks for the tip. I've got one of those pencil torches that I have used for heat shrink tubing and lite brazing.

You can wire the LED's for both running & brake lights like I have on the revco lay back license plate bracket

I would recommend just getting new bolts that are shorter. The stalks are made from a very soft metal and break easily (ask me how I know )

I agree I turned a pair out of stainless bolts and polished them. I think the bolts started life as 7/16 like $2 each.

An easier way is to go to a custom cycle shop or any shop that sell Drag Spacialties, V Twin , CC , etc... (J&P Cycles too I think) They actually sell threaded and drilled turn signal posts with enough thread to put a spacer on. Hardware stores sell stainless spacers. Not sure what they call them, maybe spacer maybe bushings maybe something else, all I know is True Value and Ace have them, here at least. Not sure if that helps mount the LEDS you are talking about, I don't know what they look like or how they are supposed to go on.

I am not even sure I will use posts at all. I might just plug the holes and fender mount something. It's still all an idea that is rattling around. I have been wanting to do something with those rear signals for quite a while, especially after performing a frontal pumkinectomy.

Those things were the first thing I did to my bike after a seat change and back rest. All done in the first couple days I owned the bike.

You can shorten the post by cuting them off with a hacksaw or in a lathe, drill and re tap the cut off end for 3/8-16 thread and put a pc of threaded rod in the end of the shaft and drill a hole thru it to allow the wires to go thru. The portion that was inside of the number plate bracket will thread directly into the signal light. Use a 3/8 jam nut on the new end inside of the plate bracket.

Looks like FriarJohn successfully shortened the rear posts sometime back. Appears he had to replace the "stalks" completely with hollow chrome tubing and threaded "pipe".

The picture depicting the mod is long gone from his www page, but it did look good.

In the same thread member larryshep explains how he modified and kept the existing posts.

You may want to contact each for specifics.

Regards,

Tom
