Hey Becky,
I installed a "Throttlemeister" on my 07 and it works well. You simply turn the knob on the end of the handlebar to pinch the handgrip. I can also throttle back without releasing the lock. I use my all the time and wouldn't be without it. It was a bit pricey ($100) but considering this is the second bike it has been on I figure it was worth it.
