Alright, my 2004 America, with just over 2000 miles just started running like crap. Rode the bike to my destination, left 3 hours later. Bike started fine, ran fine for a couple blocks, and then it started to backfire, and shut off leaving a stop light. Bike starts right up, but idles rough. Give it some gas it starts popping and back firing. Try to rev it up, to clear it out, it will rev roughly and then back fire and shut off. Pulled the plugs they look good. Haven't had a chance to look into other things. Just thought before I do, I'd see if anyone has had similar problems, and what did they do to fix it. Thanks for looking.

Last time mine did that I was missing one of the vacuum port plugs on the manifold.

inspect them closely for any cracking too. They can look OK at a glance but still be leaking.

Check battery connections as well, just in case

The rubber on those vacuum plugs will deteriorate and crack over time. Cheap replacement at an autoparts store (or even your Triumph dealer). After replacing, use small hose clamps to secure them to the vacuum ports.

Thanks alot guys for the replies, bringing the bike home tonight, definetly will check the vacuum plugs and battery cables. Sure would be nice if it was something that simple. I'll let you know what I come up with. Thanks again.

Thought I had it fixed. Checked the vacuum plugs and they all look good. Checked the battery connections, and the positive was very loose. Tightened it and the bike ran like new again. For about a mile only. Then back to the same running issues. Battery connections are still tight. Now what??? More ideas greatly appreciated. Team Triumph said maybe bad gas??? Also the battery cables and vacuum ports. So I'm going to drain it, and try new stuff, just in case.

also check the fuel filters and petcock??? i know it seems a little early in this bikes life to have fuel filter problems but thats what it kinda sounds like. i had a bike once that when the fuel filter would get clogged it would run like what you are describeing??? and we know these bikes have had an issue with the petcock, so thats easy to check cuz your gonna drain the fuel. also check the wire connections at the coil???

ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Check the vent tube from the gas tank too.

Check to see if it is pinched where the tank meets the frame and the tip over valve as well as the opening under the bike to be sure it isn't blocked with crud.

Well Gents, Success!!! Bad gas was my problem. I drained 4 gallons of the yellowist gas I have ever seen. It looked like my bike was trying to run on Mello Yello. Drained it out, ran out the line, and filled her up with a 50/50 mix of race gas and premium. Runs like new again. Smells good to. Thanks again for all your replies!!! They were greatly appreciated.!!

Do you remember where you got it? I might be back there with a bit of a bad attitude.
