So the weather around here has turned from pretty and warm to cold and rainy. The 1/2 helmet was great for summer but now I'm either freezing my face off at 6 in the morning or dealing with the pita of skimasks and goggles getting fog inside and rain outside.
Not really wanting to shell out $$$ for a decent fullface, though I may end up going that route. (anybody have one in S/XS lying unused?)
I got one of these (Shoei RJ) when I picked up my bike,

and there are shields that seem to snap on using the 3 visor snaps plus the two mysterious snaps on the side. Are these any good? Will they fit? Does it keep the wind out or does your face still freeze?
Should I just suck it up and buy a full?

Go 3/4 helmet, best of both worlds. I bought one earlier this year and love it. Just got back from an 800 mile trip, mostly on the interstate on day one. Cold, windy, I stopped and popped on my clear shield. Much better. Day two, sunny and warm, visor went back on vents open. Best thing I've bought from my bike. Did this trip last year with a 1/2 helmet (DOT). What a mistake, so unbalanced. Once you go 3/4, you can't go back to half.

I have the Scorpion EX0-200, but most major manufacturers seem to have some type of 3/4 helmt. Bought mine at helmet city, added dark visor as well.

probably a piece of junk ... but if I was in an accident I would rather be wearing it than any half helmet

if September is getting cold you might as well get a full face helmet

I'd probably been better off buying a 3/4 with shield like that Scorpion or a fullface right off the bat, so I wouldn't have a helmet sitting around that I don't like and won't use.
Anyway I decided to snatch up one of those sale fullfaces - it's only twice as much as the snap-on shields I was looking at, probably much more reliable too.
I guess I'll try to sell off that Shoei then...nice helmet but the 3/4 style just seemed to catch too much wind and whip my head around.

I've always worn 3/4 helmets since the 70's. I've tried on Full coverage Helmets but just don't like them. AFX has one called the FX-77. $64.95. Full ratings. It was featured in the August '07 Roadbike magazine under a Helmet buyers guide section. It looks very modern and has a large full "scratch resitant" shield. This is my next Helmet, but I can't find a dealer here that carries them. I may have to order online and hope for the best. www.AFXHelmets.com

I found the 3/4 helmet would catch too much air at highway speeds. Sometimes it would lift up and start choking me! I bought a HJC full face. It took some time getting used to, but it stays put. I think I paid $135.
