Is it illegal to carry a pistol in your saddlebags? Obviously you need to have a permit to conceal it on your person. You can carry a pistol in the trunk of your car legally, right?

In IL, according to a retired State Police captain, an unloaded, cased handgun can be carried in the cab of a vehicle. Ammunition can also be carried in the cab but not in the case or in the gun. 'Two physical moves to battery' is how he described it. So I'd imagine something similar would apply to saddlebags.

Interesting question. I know AZ, NM , CO, all allow you to pack it right on your hip in full view....Colorado with some restrictions. I believe Montana is the same.
California is whole nother ball a wax though I bet.
I think you are OK to pack it loaded in your saddle bags. I would take the time to research in detail each state you plan to pass through.
Arizona allows concealed carry on your person with the requisite license.
Its nice to have that security if you plan to camp out enroute.
If you do carry it in your saddlebag and its fully legal its still a good idea to tell any LEO you have it there in the event of being pulled over for a traffic violation.
Some LEO as you know have preconceived ideas about bikers anyway.

That would be the primary reason I would never carry it concealed or not.....on my person
My temperament is such that I dont want that temptation.
In the saddlebag out of reach is OK though. If you are stopped for the night camping out in the middle of nowhere at least you have it handy in the event a situation that requires personal defense should arrive.
I personally would choose not to be tempted to ezacerbate a justifianble road rage beyond the point of verbal abuse.

Most of the time, I conceal carry a pistol, riding or not. The crap about how everyone carrying is more than ready to start gun battles over the slightest provocation is horse phooey. In fact, I find that I show more restraint when carrying. Here's a blurb for all of ya: In 1987, when Florida enacted such legislation (concealed carry permits), critics warned that the "Sunshine State" would become the "Gunshine State." Contrary to their predictions, homicide rates dropped faster than the national average. Further, through 1997, only one permit holder out of the over 350,000 permits issued, was convicted of homicide. (Source: Kleck, Gary Targeting Guns: Firearms and Their Control, p 370. Walter de Gruyter, Inc., New York, 1997.) Back to the question.... As Doug stated and also in Florida, two moves to reach is considered legal (for instance; in a locked glove compartment in a snapped holster) for a non-concealed carry licensee. So if you had the pistol in a holster in your saddlebag, I'd bet you'd be OK. I also would certainly tell any LEO I was carrying.

I have had a permit to conceal carry for many years. I tend to have it on the hip, hidden under the jacket. Saddle bags are okay if you take them with you when ever you stop and leave the bike. That seems to be a hassle for me. As for road rage, the best thing is to get out of the situations and not look for trouble. The gun is only if you are an old man like me and don't want to get hurt by being beatup. Dave

Yeah, I know you folks in England think it is strange to carry a shooter with you, but I guess us Yanks are just a little different. We tend to likes our guns. I love to play with my lever action rifles. Dave

When I was on my way to the Redwood Run a guy was robbed in his tent at gun point. He walked into my camp the following morning. He was homeless and now pennyless. They also stole his AIDS medication. I offered him money and food and he declined. Saw the poor guy hitchhiking later that day. So yes I sleep with a pistol now when camping.

Years ago in my youth I lived on the South side of Tucson across the tracks so to speak ....lots of young gangbangers and wannabe gangbangers.
At that time I always carried a .380 auto in my car and some young tuffs hassled me one afternoon as I was just minding my business and pulling out of a parking lot. I got angry and chambered a round and leveled it at them. They moved on but it was scary cause I wondered later about the "what ifs and what fors"
I stopped carrying the weapon in the vehicle after that.

if the capt. and billy had had guns, would it have made a difference in the outcome??? when i took my journey around the U.S. in 77-78 i was packin and only once did it almost cost me time.  in Cali.  (of course) but i was able to get out of it ok. other than that i was glad i had it cuz there were times i was thinkin " am i gonna have to shoot one of these idiots , but never did thank goodness!!!

Well, I ain't camping, but I'm starting to think I want my P-12.45 in the motel room with me. Of course, I'd be really, really peeved if it got confiscated by Johnny Law during a traffic stop. It was not a cheap gun.
I should be okay if I put the pistol in the holster in one back and the clips in the other.
On another note, anyone have a Ruger P-85 9mm? I don't anymore but I've got a couple hi-cap mags. I should probably sell them but I'm not sure what they're worth and I haven't checked into it yet. They might fit a P-89 as well and perhaps other models. Of course, what would be ideal is to trade for some Para-Ordinance Mags (P-12, P-14, etc.) for my P-12.

"Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it" is pretty much my philosophy with everything. Guess I learned that the week I was in the Boy Scouts.
Many years ago, I had a snap holster (empty) mounted to the frame, just below the tank. I could hide it with my leg if a LEO was nearby or slide my foot forward and make it visible if I expected trouble. Made them wonder where the gun was. Sometimes I had one on me, mostly not.
But seriously, get a carry permit then follow the laws in whatever state you're in. I carry when traveling and it's been my experience that most will honor your home state's policy - if you're acting responsibly.

Another Para fan! I've got a 14.45 and LOVE it. Best I have ever shot. Obviously not my carry though, I have a glock .40 for that which I hate, unless I'm cleaning it.

Had a Para 14.45 when they first came out w/2 extra pre-ban mags. Liked it quite a bit. Had to part with it during a longer-than-planned period of unemployment. My current favorite is a Springfield Armory XD-45 w/ 13 shot clips.

I carry concealed too but I don't think I am allowed to carry into NY or NJ with a PA permit. There was talk at one point about making permits reciprical but I don't know if it ever went through.

EAA Witness .45 is my Homeland Defense weapon of choice. Can't carry it here in Illinois. With the gun laws here (Thanks Chicago) we're lucky to be legal having it in the house.

Here in NC, we can carry all day long as long as it is visible. With a permit, concealed carry is legal.

John, if you can reach and get it the weapon is considered to be on or about your person. If its loaded it is a concealed deadly weapon. You have received the correct advice. Trigger lock it and put the bullets in another one of your bags and you are good to go. That means it is not deadly unless you do something to it to make it that way.
Also, almost all states are not drive-through states meaning, if you have a permit to carry it, that permit is only good in the state that issued it.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

In VA we are a open carry state, it has to be openly visible. If you pack it under the jacket you need a concealed carry. As for carry in the saddlebags, you should be ok as long as guns and ammo are stored and cased separately (CAVEAT: check with each state you are going to be traveling in to be dad gum sure).

In NH we carry open with no permit and conceled with a permit...HOWEVER in my old home state of MA...you need to have a permit to even own a gun...and then there are three levels of permiting class A, B, or C and each has its own set of restrictions...however if you are NOT carring concealed (with a permit to do so) then your wepon MUST be secured ( and by secured they don't mean unloaded...they mean LOCKED with an approved triger or magazine lock) so if you were to carry it thru the state in yor saddle bag (illeagle to start with as you are not licenced by the state to have a wepon) but say you caught a LEO who also thinks the laws are assinine, and he was feeling nice and liked your bike...it had better be unloaded and locked in your saddle bag....no I KNOW that MA is not on your route to CA from MT...but my point is...CHECK EACH STATE you intend to be in....its easy enough with google and the NRA sites...better safe...and screw the .380 and 9mm....carry something with some stopping power... .45, .357, .44...they all come in small easy to conceal frames now...even my P14-.45 is a little bulky but a nice shoulder holster works great

I was rockin' the Ruger P-85 in college in the early 90's. My buddy picked up a P-12 and I was hooked. Sold the Ruger about 10 years ago and picked up the P-12 about 6 years ago. I don't get out shooting nearly enough, though.

If you are a certified law enforcement officer you can carry concealed anywhere in the US. Other than that read the concealed carry laws for each state on the internet......ANGELIS

This is amazing. I frequent a bass guitar forum and if guns get brought up there it starts a flame war the likes of which you've never seen. Here it is so casual. I have a few myself but don't carry. It's not legal here in Wisconsin. By the way my favorite is my S&W Md. 28 Highway Patrolman .357 mag. It an N frame but it's fun to shot. I keep it packed with 125 gr. wad cutters for around the house.

Nope, that's what reciprocity is all about. Refer to my link above although I will say always check the most current state laws that you will be traveling through.
It's unfortunate that the most comprehensive database of laws and reciprocity on the web (www.packing.org) seems to be down. If anyone has a comparable site, please post it.

Like Angelis said, I used to everyday for 7-8 years, when I worked LE in the parks. Either at work, or out on the bike. When I left that line of employment in 1983, I left the firearm at home. I don't miss it a bit.

It is a shame that packing.org is down, that site was invaluable to me when I drove from Virginia Beach, VA to Vancouver, WA. However, here's a good summary of transport rules from NRA: Federal Gun Laws Just remember to stay out of Kalifornia, New York, and DC - the places that feel they can revoke the Constitution. A good quote saved from packing: Quote:

Yeah but people who handle/carry guns have to think!! I carry all the time and it does make me less apt to fly off the handle. Not long ago a friend and I (both carrying) went to the mall. As we started away from my truck we heard the action of a weapon and some Idiot was playing with a lever action. Boy, was he shocked when he looked up into 2 pistols. Things like that still tend to make me a little jumpy.
