If solid state amps are so much better why do I hear so much about them 'doing a excellent/wonderful/great job of emulating a tube amp'

When it comes to this topic... I have a firm stand on the following:
Tubes, Class A point to point... no effects, let the speaker break up as the expressions of your playing force it to do so.

A buddy of mine built me a Dumble clone, from the schematics that are available at http://schematicheaven.com/dumble.htm

Sooo sweet.

Would you mind sharing how much all of the parts cost? And, how many labor hours and any other particulars? Thanks.

It was about a grand total for the parts. He's a pretty solid engineer and this is the fourth one he's built, so it took him about two weeks of his spare time. I'd imagine probably about 40 hours total.

There's a huge community online for building vintage clones. Do a couple of google searches and you'll start to find a ton of people that can answer your questions.
