For those of us north of the 36th parallel it has begun! That time of year when the inescapable fact that winter IS coming and it will be here soon, hits us... The winter routine is beginning, cover the pool, collect the lawn furniture, roll up the garden hoses, lower the storm windows and put the screens up. We still squeak some ride time in and if the season is kind we will ride for a few more months. But it is approaching and we can’t stop it! Riding gear gets heavier and bulkier…and all to soon it will be hung up until the sand is off the streets, in the spring… A certain melancholy washes over me at this time of year…and I begin to think of sweaters and flannel shirts, wood stoves and fireplaces…and hibernating…disappearing from the social realms, to hide out in the security of my home grab a good book and wait for spring to break…. I know it’s early still even up in the northern climes but it has begun, and there is nothing that can stop it!

Yup, the geese are back, my appaloosa already has on her winter coat. Cuyotes are in the fields hunting rabbits. Looks like winter is probably going to be early.

Geeeeeee Rob, You sure have a way to pick me up, true as it (may) be. Now I like the radiance of the woodstove better than most, but somehow the sheen has gone off the chainsaw/load/unload/stack/split/haul inside/clean ashes routine. Then again with this attached on-demand gas heated garage, I can make vrooom, vroom sounds all winter. If past behaviour holds true-to-form, I'll screw around till Late October, then scramble for sufficient dry wood to ward off the fuel oil furnace ($$) demons jh

We got a bit of a cold snap 3 weeks ago which got me thinking wood cutting. And my saws needed work. So at least now I'm on course. Got to get the tractor fixed to plow the snow. But the wood is coming along nicely. I'm 1/3 there. Just trying to get a second to cast some maxi-balls and get the muzzleloaders sighted in.

Rob - Now Stop That!!! You are just asking for trouble! Tho I may live here in the southwest, I'm up at 7000 feet elevation. The nights have started cooling off - but we are still having some monsoon storms, so summer CANT be over yet!!! And I just planned my end-of-summer, beginning-of-fall BBQ, now that we have Hatch Green chilies to make Rellenos and drink some margaritas to celebrate our long summer and hopefully even longer fall!!! I WILL NOT put away the patio furniture, and roll up the hoses yet (I don't have a pool to cover)!!!!! Besides I have a couple more long rides planned, winter can't start yet!!!! Becky

"Winter" is just one of those rumors that floats around every so often. Kinda like the 1500cc Triumph cruiser.
Don't encourage them or they'll start with the "snow" myth as well.

I know people up north are not looking forward to winter but out in the southwest it is the best time of the year.Summer is toooo freakin hot and today it was tooooooo hot, still it is starting to be nice in the mornings and evenings here.Every place has it's good points. One crazy point about summer is I usually where a jacket in the summer, true a vented summer jacket, but it helps a little to me anyway. When it's 120F+ and you ride you have to prepare for it.Going to have to get out the leathers for winter soon.It does get down into the low 20F's in the winter in the mornings here.We are outside of Phoenix out west.Sometimes cooler and sometimes warmer. To all those in really cold country maybe it's the best time to do all those mods or maintence to your bikes, good luck in those endevors.

Geez Rob! You can't at least wait until all those trees up your way in New England turn all those beautiful colors before you start down this road???!!! My gawd, Man! You probably have almost another two months until your free time will mainly encompass the reading of the collective works of Robert Frost while intermittingly peering out your window at that storage barn containing your BA all snuggled in for the winter, ya know!
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Screw this 95 degree plus heat. Roll on the fall and winter. However, you boys up north....sorry. Snow really sucks.

Gee, all these posts about winter make me question my decision to move to SC. Not! Forecast for today is a high of only (!) 83 degrees. May have to start wearing the Vanson leather jacket. SteveB

But before winter we get my favorite season fall. Today is beautiful bright blue sky, windy just slightly crisp that a jacket feels good. A great day to ride. The leaves haven't started turning yet but some of the garden is dieing off.

I'm really looking forward to not having to cut my grass and my dogs not being able to roll in the dirt and track it in to the house

According to the farmers Almanac we're in for a very mild winter . Have a strange feeling we'll be hearing vroom vroom for some time
shut up and ride

Oh I'm crazy (and stupid) enough to ride in the freezing cold (19 deg F and snowing if I recall one trip) but I don't particularly LIKE it much...
Plus it's more the ever present feeling that winter is coming...that seems to be haunting me

Rob! Snap out of the melancholia THIS MINUTE!
I was up in Hampton Beach, NH this weekend in the 90 degree SUNSHINE. HOT WONDERFUL SUNSHINE. Feasting on lobsta on the beach. Then the NEMA races at Epping....that is STILL SUMMER RIDING IN MY BOOK!
Fall equinox is not until Sept. 23, 2007, 5:51 A.M. EDT, so I'll listen to NO MORE HIBERNATION TALK until 5:52 AM on 9/23/07, Big Boy.
We've got plenty of riding before that which shall not be named..... Indian Summer Rides.... The Search for the Yummiest Apple Fritter/Apple Crisp/Apple Pie at the Apple Farms Rides..... The Halloween Runs- costumes!.... The Riding Around Catching Falling Leaves For No Good Reason Rides.

On occasion my bike runs. Only if the weather is subpar and I have no big plans to ride anywhere. I put 150 miles on yesterday visiting clients and going to the dentist. But I garuntee if I was planning on heading out to the NE Rally it would be dead.
