The Spirit of Massachusetts is the Spirit of America... Remember that little ditty? Boy, I sure do... But what about the spirit of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority? James Taylor once sang about it, in his classic "Sweet Baby James". I can tell you, they are in the Spirit of Giving! The hack-laden, nepotistically staffed turnpike authority sent me a gift! A photo of my motorcycle! Wasn't that nice of them? Although, it's a photo of the back of my bike, my @rse, and license plate. Why, you ask? Why was such a delightful gift bestowed upon me? Because, brothers and sisters, I took the EZ-Pass transponder from the windshield of my Jeep, and used it while on my motorcycle. So, I get a letter. A "warning notice"... Dearest Tax Gouged Resident, Here is a photo of your motorcycle, and your fat @rse, engaging in unauthorized use of your EZ-Pass transponder. Mail us $3.50 - and the next time this happens, we want $50 bucks. imagine that....

Boy I love the communist wealth. Think of all the computers that were crunching numbers to come up with you screwing up.

Wow, That sucks! Luckily in Illinois, you register your Ipass with your primary vehicle but can use it with any. I use mine on my bike more than my car.
Is there any charge for having the transponder? If not, get a second one. If so, start writing letters.

I would have been very tempted to send a letter back explaining that it was you who bought the transponder, not your vehicle and as such, you intend to use it to pass yourself on the tollway.

Hey Mike! If you're not allowed to use your EZ-Pass transponder with a different vehicle, then in order to get to your destination quicker that everybody else, why don't you just lane-split your way through the traffic in the regular lan........Oh! That's right! I forgot! I'll bet your state...(err, Commonwealth, I guess it's called back there)...unlike California, probably frowns upon that practice also, huh?! When, oh when, will the rest of these states in this country wise up and allow this safe practice?????!!!!! (WAIT A MINUTE HERE!!!! I forgot about that time I rented a car in Boston once....never mind...with THOSE drivers you've got back there, maybe you guys SHOULDN'T be allowed to lane-split!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I'm trying to figure out where in the lyrics James Taylor made reference to the MTA.

Now the first of December was covered with snow. And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston.

I have to agree with Greybeard on this one. If I'm going to buy an EZ-pass and put money on it I should be able to use it in any vehicle I want.

Your EZ pass is keyed to a specific vehicle. I called when renting a car. They told me I had to write a letter and request use on the rental car and give them the license number of the rental. Of course I didn't have that, so just used it anyway. I think if you do it occasionally, you'll get away with it. I really didn't think they'd ever follow-up so this shocks me. Not enough shock to stop my occasional practice mind you...

When I lived in MD I used my ezpass on multiple cars, just had to go online or call and add the plate #. Same here in IL, use the same Ipass for 2 cars and my bike. Of course there's always the option of a side mounted lic plate and swing your foot over the tag when going through the toll lanes.

I wouldn't...they can track those e-passes pretty easy. Read an article on a current events forum that divorce attorneys have been getting EZPass records on the husbands to show they weren't where they said they were (i.e. cheating).

You can use your ezpass on up to 4 plates. You just need to go on line and add the additional plates you want. You can also add on up to 4 transponders on your account at no extra cost. I’ve got one in the cage and the other on my scooter.

I don't think that is correct unless they changed things since last summer. I also have four tags on my account, all for work colleagues on my company credit card. They are each keyed to a specific vehicle. I always assumed they'd have a tough time keeping the tag/vehicle thing straight and figured they just wouldn't bother.

Al, I’m not sure if you have a commercial or regular EZpass. There is a difference. I’ve had up to 3 transponders on my account, and add in and take off plates all the time depending if I’m in my vehicle or not. The plates are attached to the account not the transponder. If I’m in a different vehicle for that trip, I go on line and add that plate to my account. When I get home I remove it. When I review my EZpass history it will tell me which of my transponders was used. I’ve done it that way since I started using my account about 3 years ago. In case you don’t have it, the EZpass web site in MD is www.ezpassmd.com. It makes it easy adding or subtracting plates…. Gene

Fred: We do have a commercial account, but you know what - I don't see any reason I can't change plates on-line. When I called them on this it might have been before the on-line system. I used it before to check my charges, but never thought about updating/changing vehicles. I've always wasted time writing a letter. I did also notice the vehicles for my boss and the company Prez are wrong - I'll have to update tomorrow. Both have had new vehicles for over a year, with nothing from EZ-Pass. I guess they'll get you sooner or later. Thanks for prompting me to check their webpage (and I stand corrected! Quote:

In Florida you can register several vehicles to one EZ-Pass transponder. Currently I have both cars and the bike registered. I am sure every state does it differently..

MIKE! That's sinfully awful - 1984? Big Brother? I am glad I ride barefoot on gravel roads in Alabama. And "Sweet Baby James" is one of my favorites.

I don't know what the fuss is about the EZ Pass. Everyone knows that it is just an extension of the Patriot Act - a way of checking who's who and what we're all doing. I for one feel much safer knowing that our government has yet another way of tracking us - oh sorry, I mean terrorists. Siggy

What is EZ Pass ... is it an alternative to the 'Road Tax' that we have in England?

Yes, my covert movements on the motorcycle are of extreme interest to the federal government. By checking my EZ Pass records, they'll find I went on... VACATION.
Lowey, it's a way of paying tolls on certain highways. EZ Pass is electronic as opposed to waiting in line to pay in cash.

Man, has this thread taken a turn...
EZ Pass saves me probably 2-3 hours per year of sitting in toll booth lines waitng to pay. I drive about 60k per year on the East Coast turnpike system. Now you know why I ride the bike every chance I get....
