Ok all, as you know i am a soccer guy, but I wanted to get your input on this here football game of yours.

My wife and I were watching some of the college games on saturday night. She is a big UT fan, having spent her college life in Knoxville, TN that is to be expected, so I to have become a bit of a Vols fan.

While watching the games on saturday and seeing all these stadiums packed out to the rafters it got me thinking.

What gets more support, College ball or Pro ball. I am 80 miles from Knoxville and 100 and a bit miles from both Atlanta and Nashville. On saturdays during football season everyone around here goes mad with cook outs, partys and what not, people drive around with the Orange flags on their cars so on. It seems the whole state goes Orange crazy. But I rarely see Titans flags or Falcons flags. People around here talk about UT all the time, but i dont even know any Titans fans. Which brings me to my question.

What is concidered the most supported or passionate. The college balls fans or the pro ball fans. Which game is the biggest, most important.

Depends, the college and pro fans differ somewhat. College fans tend to be college educated and pro fans less so. College fans are slightly more Republican and pro fans slightly more Democrat. College fans are usually a little wealthier and stick to their teams no matter where they move. Pro fans are likelier to change teams if they move.

Both the big time college and pro games are highly commercialized and are huge community events. There are a lot more college teams spread over much more of the country including cities that could never support a pro team.

Both have passionate fans but there are more rivalries in the college game.

As for which is more important, that depends on who you ask.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I'd say Larry has it down pretty well here, Mark.

Never really thought much about the political leanings of the Pro v. College fans however but he may be right about that too, as pro teams are almost exclusively based in the larger urban settings of this country.

(the Packers being the exception that proves the rule here of course.....oh, and L.A. not having a pro team being the OTHER exception that proves this rule too...even though SOME might say that the U.S.C. Trojans really ARE a pro team)

I think both college football and pro football pretty much get equal support, just not neccesarily from the same people. Like Larry mentiones, a lot of it may depend on the area people grew up in. Areas that do not have regional NFL teams, may lean more towards supporting local college teams more than pro teams. However, it is not always the case. Like our bikes, it all boils down to personal choice and preference.

Except for the couple of years I was in the Navy in San Diego, I have never lived anywhere with their own NFL team. But, since I was a kid, I have always been a Chargers fan and never really been loyal to any certian college team, although I have always hoped the local colleges did well.

I live in Nashville and one thing to remember is that the Titans did not start playing here until 1999. The first few years they were here it was like going to a college game. A few years ago the Titans where the top seller of the car flags. Things have mellowed a bit since but there is still plenty of fans for both teams.

Why Dwight,

That may be the singularly most accurate thing you've ever said here..."BackingthePack" is more a calling, a lifestyle, a genetic predisposition.

Of course I grew up 45 miles west of Green Bay and was weaned on the likes of Lombardi, Jordan, Davis, McGee, Starr, Hornung, not to mention a personal favorite, Elijah Pitts (Philander Smith College, Arkansas)

Packer Stockholder/Team Owner . OK, so it's a single share. Barkeep, please give my friend Dwight here a cold Leinies

Well, the Falcons suck, so I would'nt look for any fans displaying any support for them...They have always sucked, just some years, more than others...Georgia Tech is doing good, but Georgia got their arses handed to them saturday...so you can root for anybody in Tennessee, don't worry about the State of Georgia...for now..

We were watching that game saturday night. My wife was very dissapointed. The Carolina coach, Spurier or someone, she dislikes him. And according to the commentators, so do a lot of people.

Interesting thing i saw advertised today. Next month the Atlanta Falcons play the Titans in Nashville on the same weekend that University of Georgia play Tennessee in Knoxville. Seems this is the first time this has ever happened.

Be nice to see Tennessee beat Georgia twice in the same weekend.

Don't know why John(actually I do, of course), but all I can think of after reading this is comedian Frank Caliendo doing his John Madden impression of talkin' up Brett Favre...

"That's right Pat! I remember once seein' Brett Favre throw a football 400 yards...UNDERWATER!!!"

(BTW...Thanks for the drink. I'll get the next round!)

Provo, Utah (Home of the Brigham Young University Cougars) IS the WORST city in the United States of America. They try to control everyones life and treat adults like iresponsible children that can't choose for themselves. I think there must only one bar in the whole town.

And so I say GO UTES!!!
