Took the wife out for a ride over the long weekend and hit old route 66 heading east out of Oklahoma City. Great ride by the way for all you Sooners. Anyway, at our first site seeing stop at the round barn outside of Arcadia, we found a great local bike shop called Biker Shack. The ladies working the counter were very friendly and they had a great selection of leather gear.
While I was looking at a new vest, one of the owners mentioned that if I was interested in anything, I better keep a hold of it since there were a bunch of Norwegians that just arrived. This kind of took me by surprise considering we just don't get many Norwegians in Oklahoma. Well she wasn't kidding! Soon about 30 Norwegian bikers came in the shop. It was getting a little crowded so I headed out to the bike to grab some water. It looked like most of them had arrived on Harleys, but a couple of guys had gathered around my America, so I struck up a conversation. From what I was able to understand through the very thick accents, they were all from Norway and had traveled to Chicago earlier in the week to ride the entire length of Route 66, and some do it every year. They were very nice and having grown up with Norwegian grandparents, very enjoyable to listen to. One gentleman in particular really liked the bike and mentioned that he had a 40 year old BSA back in Oslow. Just another example of the wondrous variety that is in store when you head out for a ride.

Ah HA! I wonder if this could explain Mark's (b717doc) friend not wanting to ride very far from his home???!!!(see the "Sorry, just don't get it" thread)  The guy may just be trying to avoid all those norwegian hordes out there apparently running amuck on american highways today on their rented Harley-Davidson motorcycles!!!   (actually...good story there, Andrew)

Interesting, because I was here in Albuquerque and snoopin around the area on the weekend and ran into 2 different French (insert obligatory here) couples in their rental cars doing the Route 66 from Chicago also. One couple was just west of Albq. and I offered to take their picture on the old river bridge, and the other couple I offered to take their picture at the Boca Negra petroglyphs. Nice folks...Anybody want a slightly used digital camera or two??? later, Tom.
But, what do I know?

I believe I rmrmber a post form a guy from Norway, saying he was Going to be traveling US route 66 in a few weeks, (taht was a few weeks ago) wonder if he was part of that group.

I've heard parts of Route 66 are in such disrepair its difficult to ride. Is this true or just a myth?

DaveM-Route 66 is the classic American cross country pre-freeway highway-there have been songs and TV shows that starred it and the many towns along the way-that put the freedom of the open road in a convertible or on a bike in every kids dreams. It has largely been replaced by multilane divided interstate-but large stretches of it still exist and have an almost cult like following. I lived right beside it in Kingman, Arizona when I was a kid and in Missouri in 2004-5, and always enjoy traveling on the old girl.

Thanks some very interesting history behind it all. I will check it out on Google Earth when I get home tonight. Now I can understand why people are coming from all over to ride it.

That was Rune Dahlen, user name Dahla.
I went to the Eagle Riders shop here in St Charles to meet him when he picked up his Harley for the trip.
I got there at 9 am and they told me his flight had been delayed into New Orleans and they were running about 6 hours late.
Anywho, I had to get to work and didn't get a chance to wish him well on his way.
He said something about going to Springfield, IL so I don't know if he was heading west at all.

yea! That is some good stuff. when I was a tyke we had a neighbor lady that always had some fresh Lefse for us in the afternoon.

Yep, Mom's cooking. She only does Lefse at Christmas, anymore - and still uses the rolling pin her mother brought over on the boat.
About 100 years of Lefse making with that pin.

My wife still makes a mean lefse and she's only 48. that means a lot of fattening christmas' in the future.

sorry I didn't get there on time. I hoped you got the message, it would have been cool seeing you there.
Right now I'm actually on Flagstaff in Arizona. We've traveled west from St.Louis and from here we've will most likely leave the 66 and go to the grand canyon. From there we will gop to las vegas, and then go to san fransisco and do the highway 1 to los angeles! 
And I'm not a part of that group. but we've some people who have run in to them. Terry Wrinkle (a guy who runs a route 66 shop told us that he had a couple of norwegians in for breakfast)

The biggest part of it is burried under the interstate. Some is still in regular use and is kept up, some is just a bit of ragged pavement that you can't even get to.Bloody shame, at least I got to travel 66 a few times before the government ruined it.

Judie and I just yesterday drove from Prescott to Flagstaff to see the Lowell Observatory there, and drove through Williams AZ to get there, which old Route 66 is the main street through that little town.
What I've always thought was pretty cool is that most of these towns that the old 'Mother Road' went through have reburbished their storefronts on it and those places are somewhat like a window back to those days when people like Steinbeck's Joad family where driving upon it.

hey all! here are som pics from the trip, I had over 800 to choose from, but I think is pretty much gives a good picture (!) the pics are not sorted, and is kind backwards but here goes: this was the best trip ever, I met alot of nice people! you americans are really cool, outgoing people, making this trip a real joy, and it will forever be remember! Iwant to go back someday and visit more of your great (and BIG!) country!             ready to leave, St.Louis  me, Grand Canyon!         me on the left, kind of intoxicated! :P
