I think I'm getting ready to do something about this stock seat and I was wondering if you all could help. Does it really take 2000 miles to break in a Corbin, and how does if feel in the meantime ? Did most of you get leather or the breathable vinyl - and why did you decide either way. Thanks a lot for any help or advice.

I have done well over 2000 miles and mine is a stiff as heck, if it wasn't for the back rest I would of changed back to the stock. All leather mine, just like the leather and its water resistant (to a point) which helps a great deal in the UK

I think the way to fly is to pull the cover off the stock seat and do a gel insert with memory foam over the gel then [put the cover back on.
I posted complete directions a while back.

I have 25,000 miles on mine and it still hurts when I ride for more than an hour of so. The shape is good but way too hard. I put the Airhawk seat cover on and can ride for 12 hours a day with it on top of the Corbin. Like birchr said, the backrest is its saving grace. Of course it doesn't help to have been born without a butt.

I love my Corbin, from the start, could only ride about 30-45 mins before the stock seat caused pain from 'sitting' on my tailbone. Combination of the shaped Corbin and floorboards allows me to ride for hours. (I did it before the unreasonable price increase) I also take my own 'padding' with me where ever I go...... so I find the seat very comfortable.

Ian that sounds interesting - where could I find that post. I thought I had exhausted every search on seat stuff, but I must have missed some. You know I don't want to shell out big bucks and not have the seat be comfortable or have to sell it here. I'm for modifying if I can get some suggestions.

I think Nobby was complaining about his being hard to.... and when he enquired about sending it back it was around £70 in postage to get it back, then around the same to post it back to him, and then he'd have to pay customs on it when he got it back.... so it'll be around £200.
Could be cheaper to get some one over here to reupholster.

here is what I had posted My opinion is to keep it for awhile and see how it goes with your wifes back. Wendy also has serious back problems and what we are going to do is I am going to make a back rest and do a gel insert for her seat. You remove the seat ... then mark the cover placement....remove the cover , carefully......measure and cut the gel to the area you want....cut the foam about .5" deeper than the gel using electric bread knife and cutting just small pieces at a time to make it easier to control depth.......sand the area smooth with something like a die grinder and small surface prep pad.....glue gel in......fill remaining hole with some memory foam (optional but worth it).....again sand smooth...replace cover.
I have actual instructions in a Word doc. and pictures to show the process. If you want I can Email them to you. I found the memory foam and gel on Ebay cheap.

It really does take a while to break in, but it's worth it. The backrest is awesome. The stock speedy seat is like sitting on a bag of rocks after an hour.

Ian thanks a lot, from your description I think I've got the idea what to do. I've torn apart and put together things all my life so I guess I can do this one....and after all I can't make it any more uncomfortable than it is now. Thanks again.

be sure to make alignment marks on the cover and pan and again on the foam and pan so during reassembly it is easy to line back up.

You can always send the seat to Butt Buffers and they will do the installation for you. Here is a link I had one of the removable pads which I really liked, but opted for the Corbin because of the backrest.

I got mine used...leather...its a bit hard at first but my butt doesnt get as numb as it used to with teh oem seat. I think its more the shape of the seat. The back seems to ahve more support and keeps me from sitting on my tail bone.
Im looking forward to getting a backrest some day.

i also put a back-rest on my BA,got it from PRO-TAC in s.c.,[1800-698 2678. it has worked out well, i thinh it was
i also installed a backrest, got 3 months or so from PRO-TAC in S.C., $120 or so, it has worked out well, worth the bucks. easy install, bolts brackets to fender support and top shock bolt. backrest slides in and out for easy installation/removal,,,BTW,,good folks to deal with. [18006982678]

Degrees of satisfaction must come under the bolded heading "Your Results May Vary", regarding the sacred butt/seat contact zone. Being fortunate in more ways than I can count, my Corbin (leather) was comfortable from the moment of installation, I think around 25,000 miles ago. I'd been foreworn and heard of "breakin miles", but it wasn't my experience. I believe my seat was made on a Tuesday afternoon following a coffee break when the Corbin Hobbits were well rested. jh

Everyone's experience with the Corbin is different Al. Mine broke in pretty fast for me and I like it because the stock one I couldn't do more than an hour before my butt would hurt.
The Corbin I've ridden ten hour days and my butt has been the only thing not sore. Most have found that getting the "pillow top" stitching on top help with the stiffness of the seat. I've got the backrest and would have to agree with the others that it is the best part of it, althoug I only use mine on long rides. I've found that my seat lower me and pushed me forward so that the pinch I felt between my shoulder blades on rides disappeared.
Recently I bought a sheepskin pad for the seat and that has removed the little butt burn that I still get.
Unfortunately you can't know what will work until you try it. Since the price of a Corbin is so high I would suggest trying other cheaper solutions and if you still have the problem, sell what you have and get the Corbin then.

I have come to believe it is a matter of taste and butt dimensions. In many cases the Corbin is a status symbol I think since you can get great results from doing a gel insert in the stock seat. I can see cases where a short inseam might call for a lower profile seat or a different shape for a different shape would be the ticket. It all boils down to what the individual needs or wants and what they find comfortable. If we all found the same thing comfy there would be no sleep number bed or aftermarket seats or even different style bikes with different riding position.

Ian, I need to call you on this. This is your first post about inserting a gel pad into a seat. Initial postYou plagurised word for word from this artical! Source At first I thought that I would let it slide, but you've referenced it a few times. A lot of people here earn income from their writing, art, whatever. There is nothing wrong with referencing other people's work, but you should give proper credit.

No break in time for the corbins. They either come plush or not. Sure the leather conforms to your backside over time, but not to the point of softening up.
Leather breathes, vinyl doesn't.
My comfort is on top of the saddle's upholstery. Not in it.
Everyone's butt is different. Thus I won't sell you on corbin. I have two corbin saddles.

I never said it was my idea I even sent those very instructions and pics to a member here. If you want to knock someone knock the source you got it from or maybe the one I did ,I'm not sure but that same set of pix and instructions are on several different pages and credit taken by several different people.I did it the way I did it so people could just read it instead of going to a web page and it is always there. If that page went away and I hadn't done it the way I did then what? I also posted if you took the time to read that I have the pix to go with it and the pix are obviously NOT one of our seats. I never even said I had done it but was going to do it on Wendys bike. So call all you want I misrepresented nothing and claimed no credit for the idea only credit for bringing it to this forum. They are making no money off the instructions and they are posted on the web for public use. If asked instead of attacked I would have told anyone what page to get it from if I still remembered or send the instructions and pix to anyone who asked just as I recently did with no claims of it being my idea or my instructions.

A. The post did look like it was a cut-and-paste job. The spelling and grammar were entirely too correct for it to have been written by Ian (I kid! I kid!). B. "No harm no foul" has no place in copyright law, but it does in fair usage. No money changed hands or was prevented from changing hands, but that doesn't make it okay. C. A link would've been nice not just for attribution but also so we could see the pictures. D. I tried a gel pad on my stock seat (not in it) and it was horrible. Much like the Corbins, your mileage may vary.

Ian, I came down kinda hard. I appologise for that. However, I write training material for my in-house stuff, and also for government/associations. I don't mind my stuff being referenced, but I should get credit. People should take more care when referencing other peoples work.
I didn't mean to malign you, and no harm was intended.

No one need worry about cut and paste jobs for installation instructions or other non intellectual property on the internet.
It that were the case we would all be felons for posting jokes without finding out who wrote them first. LOL
