This may not be the best, but here's what I know. I would never use the aluminum wheel cleaner as stated above, I've seen what it can do, and don't want any part of it.
Earlier this week, I had to clean off some chain lube off the rear wheel from a bit of over zealous application. As anyone knows, that stuff is like tar and glue mixed together. I figured I would try some WD40 to clean it up. Man, that stuff cleaned my rear wheel like brand new with about zero elbow grease. It really shines now. I made sure to remove all the residue I could so that it won't attract dirt/dust, and 3 days/200 miles later, it still looks good.
On the front wheel, I would just use was/polish, maybe WD40 for stubborn tar/grease...
